Le Mesnil-Saint-Denis offers a variety of starting points for an exploration: nature watching at the Étang des Noës, routes through the countryside, and architectural and religious history. When planning your visit, it makes a difference whether you want to walk and fish, go mountain biking, or plan a visit that requires a reservation.

Birds and scenery at the Étang des Noës

The Étang des Noës is ecologically remarkable and a refuge for numerous birds. It is an important resting place for migratory waterbirds; protected areas provide undisturbed nesting sites for other species. Resting and nesting are therefore two distinct functions of this natural site. Those interested in birds will find links here both to migration and to protected habitats.

The Étang des Noës is a peaceful place for walking and fishing. If you plan to fish, check the applicable conditions in advance, as fishing regulations may be set separately. Forest borders Le Mesnil-Saint-Denis to the east and south, adding another clearly defined landscape to the area’s natural setting.

Hiking or mountain biking

The “A la lisière entre ville et campagne” route starts and ends at the car park on Rue Henri Husson in Le Mesnil-Saint-Denis. The same location therefore serves as both the starting and finishing point, giving you a specific reference for planning your trip. As parking regulations can change, it is best to check them in advance.

The “Circuit du Pommeret” mountain-bike loop offers a different way to get around and is connected with Le Mesnil-Saint-Denis. It passes through forests, hamlets and plateaus. While the hiking route has a fixed car park as its starting and finishing point, the loop takes in a series of different landscape features. The two options therefore have different focuses, and you do not need to plan them as a single route.

Castle, monastery and sacred art

Château du Mesnil was built in 1589 and is listed as a historic monument. The dovecote, turrets, moats and part of the original main building have been preserved. The castle’s history is therefore reflected not only in its date: the surviving structural elements also provide specific points of reference for viewing the site.

The Skit du Saint-Esprit offers a different cultural focus: it is a Russian Orthodox monastic centre in the Byzantine style and has been located in the Bois du Fay since 1934. Its frescoes and icons are associated with the icon painter Grégoire Krug. Visits are organised and require a reservation. If you plan to visit, arrange your reservation and date in advance; visiting arrangements may change.

The Church of Saint-Denis in Le Mesnil-Saint-Denis is also associated with sacred art. It houses the protected painting “Martyre de saint Denis”, attributed to Gabriel-François Doyen and restored in 2014 and 2015. The work “Saint Jacques le Majeur, avec retable” is also located in the church. These artworks add a distinctive note alongside the architectural history of the castle and monastery.

A farm visit by appointment

Ferme de Champgarnier offers free farm visits by prior appointment. As visiting arrangements can change, it is best to confirm your appointment again before your trip. The farm also sells beef and veal from its own herd. Sales arrangements can change too, so check in advance if you plan to make a purchase.
