The Forêt de Sainte-Apolline, the Château de Plaisir and several cultural venues offer different highlights for a trip to Plaisir. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you would like to focus on the landscape, historic sites or events. The town offers some specific starting points: a large forest with walking trails, protected sites, two performance venues and a media library.
Forest, wetland and traces of history
The Forêt de Sainte-Apolline is a 294-hectare forest and also a wetland in Plaisir and Neauphle-le-Château. Walking trails and picnic areas make it a great place to spend time outdoors. There are also traces of history: the remains of a former fortified manor house have been preserved in the forest. A centuries-old lime-tree avenue marks the site of a former chapel. Natural features and evidence of past use thus come together in this landscape, without the historic traces being equated with the walking trails.
There is a car park for visitors to the forest. It can also be reached on Hourtoule bus line 10 towards Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, getting off at the “La Chaine” stop. As access information can change, check the connection and timetable before travelling. The combination of forest, wetland and historic remains makes this place especially interesting if you do not want to treat nature and history as separate subjects.
Château and protected sites
The Château de Plaisir and the Parc du Château were classified as historic monuments by a decree dated 25 August 1961. The château is one of the oldest surviving early modern castles in Yvelines. For a visit focused on heritage, this designation is a clear starting point: the château and park are the named historic attractions, while the surviving structure gives the Château its particular significance in regional history.
The Domaine de Plaisir is another protected site. About 50 hectares have been classified as a protected site since the decree of 26 December 1946; the château is excluded from this area. The two statements therefore refer to different forms of protection: the Château and Parc du Château are historic monuments, while the approximate area of the Domaine excludes the château. The Church of Saint-Pierre also houses the polychrome limestone statue “Sainte Catherine”, which was listed as a protected movable object on 3 November 1982.
Performance venues and cultural activities
The Théâtre Coluche is a performing arts venue with 868 seats. Its main stage is designed for both large-scale productions and more intimate performances. La Clé des Champs opened in 2006 and has 300 seats. Its varied programme includes national and international artists as well as talent from the regional scene. Two studios, a bar and numerous cultural activities round out the offering. As programmes change seasonally, check the specific event dates before travelling.
The Médiathèque Alphonse-Daudet also offers a range of cultural and practical amenities. Its children’s area includes books and games, as well as activities and workshops. There is also a quiet reading and study area with free Wi-Fi. The selection ranges from books and CDs to DVDs and vinyl records. In Plaisir, both stage performances and reading and media resources are part of the town’s cultural scene.
Getting there and planning your stay
Plaisir is served by two railway stations: Plaisir-Grignon and Plaisir-Les Clayes. Check the timetables separately for your travel date. For planning, you can use the stations, the bus connection to the Forêt de Sainte-Apolline and the seasonal cultural programmes as separate points of reference; the information given does not constitute a single route. This lets you choose the focus of your trip without having to combine nature and cultural activities into a fixed itinerary.
