Those who want to get to know Maisons-Alfort on foot can choose the PR42 as a themed starting point. The signposted circular walking route begins at Maisons-Alfort–Alfortville station, passes through all seven neighbourhoods and includes 32 sights to explore the city’s architectural and natural heritage. For planning, it is advisable to check the signage and route status again before your trip.

Discover Culture and Architecture

The Château de Réghat is a historic landmark: the building dates from the 18th century and is one of the oldest in the city. Since September 2003, it has housed the Musée de Maisons-Alfort. The château’s garden-facing façades and roofs have been listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1979. The museum includes a crypt dedicated to archaeological remains found in Maisons-Alfort.

Sainte-Agnès offers a different architectural perspective: a modernist church associated with the “Chantiers du Cardinal” movement. Its nave is angled 30 degrees from the main façade; the church has been classified as a historic monument since 21 December 1984. Fort de Charenton adds a military history perspective: it was the first of 16 forts built around Paris in the 19th century.

The École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort is also part of the city’s institutional heritage. It is the world’s oldest grande école still located at its original site. The Musée Fragonard adds another focus on collections: founded in 1766, it is one of France’s oldest museums. It preserves thousands of anatomical specimens, skeletons and écorchés. The Musée Fragonard offers individual visits without reservations; check visitor information before your trip.

Green Spaces and Paths Along the Marne

Maisons-Alfort has 75 hectares of publicly accessible green spaces, connected by a network of green walking paths. Another specific option by the water is the Promenade Paul Cézanne: it runs alongside the river for more than four kilometres and is used by walkers and joggers. The PR42 is a circular route through the seven neighbourhoods that brings together local sights; the promenade, by contrast, is a riverside route defined by its length. The two walking experiences can therefore be distinguished by the features described for each.

The banks of the Marne at Pont de Charenton form a valuable ecosystem for local wildlife and plant life. The Maison de l’Environnement is also located on the banks of the Marne, in a converted former petrol station. It hosts exhibitions, workshops and events throughout the year to raise ecological awareness and promote biodiversity. Individual event dates may change; check the schedule if you are planning to attend a specific activity.

More Activities in the Area

At the Ferme de Maisons-Alfort, visitors can see a variety of farm animals. Information panels explain farm activities and the animals. Workshops and events are held regularly, including sheep shearing, “apprentice farmer” days and Easter egg hunts during the school holidays. For these activities too, it is worth checking the dates before your trip.

The free skatepark in Parc La Fontaine offers skateboarding, inline skating, scootering and BMX. This adds specific activities to the cultural and nature-based options, so your stay need not be limited to just one way of exploring.
