A short walking trail on the hillside and in the Grand Morin valley adds a landscape perspective to this cultural heritage. Bus route 12 runs between Chessy and Meaux via Coutevroult.

Fortified Houses, Châteaux, and Church

The Château de Montaumer was a fortified house and an outpost of the Marches de Champagne. Measures to demolish the château were taken on February 26, 1850. Today, Montaumer is known as the Ferme de Montaumer. Its former strategic role, the demolition measures, and its present-day name belong to different periods in the history of the area.

When it comes to the Château du Vivier, it is important to distinguish between two dates. The former fortified house belonged to Guillaume du Vivier in 1172 and commanded the valley. The present-day Château du Vivier dates from the Medici period and has since been remodeled. The year 1172 refers to the former house, not to the construction of the present-day château.

The Château de la Brosse, also known as La Petite Motte, was restored during the Medici period. It remains municipal property and now houses the new town hall. Compared with the Château du Vivier, the Medici period here refers to a restoration; there, it dates the present-day building. These similar references to a period can thus be distinguished without equating restoration with construction.

The present-day Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was rebuilt in 1745 on the site of the former church. The enclosure and the baptismal font cabinet date from the 19th century. The church thus brings together details from two centuries: its reconstruction in the 18th century and later-dated elements. Local heritage also includes two remains of washhouses with captured water. At the church, the enclosure marks the boundary of the church grounds, while the baptismal font cabinet is an item of church furnishings.

Landscape and Trails

Coutevroult is affected by the Type 2 ZNIEFF “Forêt de Crécy” (No. 110020158); the area lies south of the commune. If the precise boundary is important for your plans, check the current boundary designation.

A short walking trail runs along the hillside in Coutevroult and follows the Grand Morin valley from Esbly to Crécy. This describes both its hillside route and its extent between the two places. Before setting out, check locally whether the route is currently maintained.
