Syam offers several points of interest for a stay: the architecture of the Villa Palladienne, the history of the Forges de Syam, and routes for walking or mountain biking. If you are considering Syam as a place to stay, you can first decide whether cultural history, a connection with nature, or physical activity is your priority. The two routes differ considerably in activity, length and stated difficulty.
Landscape and local context
The Forges de Syam are located at the confluence of the Ain and Saine rivers. The commune of Syam is also part of the ZNIEFF “L’Ain à l’aval de Bourg-de-Sirod”, dated 2025. The name refers to the Ain downstream of Bourg-de-Sirod; the area’s designation also includes Syam. Thus, the precise location of the Forges and a broader geographical designation for nature exist side by side. For planning purposes, this means that the Forges are located at a named confluence, while the ZNIEFF also includes the commune.
Architecture and history
The Villa Palladienne, also known as Château de Syam, was built in 1818 by ironmaster Emmanuel Jobez. It has a square floor plan, a peristyle supported by eight columns, and three circular balconies. The square floor plan and the rounded balcony shapes create contrasting geometric accents; the peristyle with its eight columns is another distinctive architectural feature. The buildings of the Forges de Syam also have their own historical significance: they were listed as historic monuments in 1993–1994. 1818 is the villa’s construction date, while 1993–1994 dates the listing of the Forges buildings.
Hiking and mountain biking
The La Roche des Sarrazins route is a very easy 6-kilometre circular hike. It leads to the Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix chapel at the summit of Les Rochettes. Parking is available at the Les Gyps picnic area in Syam, the starting point. The Les Pertes de l'Ain à VTT – 62B mountain-bike route follows a different course: it passes through Syam and runs mainly along forest tracks and through meadows. This easy circular route is 18.5 kilometres long. The hike leads to a named destination; for the mountain-bike loop, the circular format and terrain offer further points of reference when choosing a route. The ratings and distances of both routes may be updated. Check these details before setting off.
The Source Intermittente
The Source Intermittente appears under certain water-level conditions and has a periodicity of about seven minutes. After rain, both access and crossing can be difficult. If you plan to visit the spring, take water levels and rain into account; after rain, check conditions before planning access or a crossing. The seven-minute figure is therefore a guideline, not a fixed interval.
