Salins-Les-Bains brings together the history of salt production, thermal bathing and a hiking destination with views of the Jura Mountains. The destination thus offers a variety of experiences: underground technology and an experience pool sit alongside a fortification and trails on Mont Poupet. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether culture, bathing or outdoor activities should take centre stage.
The Grande Saline: Salt History Underground
The Grande Saline operated for 1,200 years; its work ended in 1962. The underground gallery, dating from the 13th century, houses a 19th-century hydraulic pump that is still working. The two dates illustrate different layers of the site: the space is medieval, while the pump still in operation comes from a much later period. On the guided tour, visitors descend to two saltwater extraction wells protected by vaulted ceilings. Check the seasonal availability of this tour for your travel dates.
ThermaSalina: An Experience Pool with a Range of Features
ThermaSalina offers a clear contrast to the historic saltworks. The ground-floor facility covers 2,800 m² and features naturally saline water. The thermal experience pool is designed for relaxation; facilities include a whirlpool, massage jets, a counter-current swimming lane and swan-neck jets. The different features can be distinguished by their purpose: the counter-current lane adds a swimming option, while the whirlpool and jets are other pool facilities. Since visiting conditions and the availability of facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.
Fort Saint-André: Fortifications and Views
Fort Saint-André was rebuilt by Vauban from 1674 onwards. The site includes hidden rooms, military buildings, defensive walls and gardens; it also offers views of the town and surrounding landscape. The rebuilding from 1674 provides a different historical reference point from the Grande Saline gallery, which dates from the 13th century. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether a reservation is required.
Mont Poupet: Elevation and Hiking Destination
Mont Poupet is used for hiking and nature walks and offers panoramic views. It stands at an elevation of 853 m, rising 500 m above the Furieuse valley. These figures refer to two different measurements: 853 m is the mountain’s elevation, while 500 m is its height above the valley. A hiking route leads from Salins-Les-Bains, the thermal spa town, to the summit, offering views of the Jura Mountains. If you prefer a hike with a clearly defined destination, you can take this summit route; Mont Poupet is also used for nature walks. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
