Grusse combines a Jura reculée with architectural heritage and craft ceramics. The Reculée de Grusse-Val-Sonnette is a natural attraction; traditional stone houses, the Demeure Secrétan and the Atelier du Grain d’Argile add further points of interest. Choosing this destination lets you experience the landscape, local history and pottery as distinct aspects of your stay.
Landscape and views
A wooded combe shapes the landscape of the Reculée de Grusse-Val-Sonnette. It is considered a Jura valley basin; its formation is explained by the erosion of layered limestone deposits by water over around 200 million years. The combe defines the landscape, while the belvedere puts the panoramic view centre stage. The Belvédère de la Madone offers a 360-degree panorama over the Bresse and the Burgundy hills. From Grusse, the belvedere can be reached via the GR®59. Check the trail conditions and markings before setting out.
The village’s architectural history
The Demeure Secrétan links local history with a specific building. Antoine Joseph Secrétan retired to Grusse in 1821 and had the Demeure built there; the residence is neoclassical. The buildings and tomb at the Demeure have been listed as historic monuments since 28 March 2008. The property is privately owned. The dates mark different milestones: 1821 relates to the house’s origins, while 2008 marks the protection of the buildings and tomb.
Traditional construction offers a different perspective: the houses in Grusse are grouped stone buildings with flat-tile roofs. In contrast to the individual neoclassical Demeure, the village’s characteristic house style is defined by the grouping, stone and flat tiles. Another historical detail can be found at the Saint-Roch Chapel: a stone bearing the date 1770 is located above the former altar.
Ceramics at the Atelier du Grain d’Argile
At the Atelier du Grain d’Argile, a workshop and exhibition space come together. Muriel Grosjean Kovarik presents functional and decorative ceramics in a 20-square-metre space. The two types of ceramics have different emphases: functional ceramics are intended for use, while decorative ceramics focus on design. Grosjean Kovarik uses the Gallo-Roman technique of terra sigillata and locally sourced earth for her work. Those interested in the craft can consider the exhibition and the production method as two distinct aspects of the atelier.
Themed pottery classes and workshops are offered throughout the year; dates may vary. Visits to the exhibition space are preferably by appointment, and access arrangements may change. If you are planning a visit or a class, check in advance what appointment arrangements apply for your chosen date.
Seasonal produce and a break
Les Jardins de Grusse grows organically cultivated vegetables and seasonal red fruit in Grusse. Seasonal produce can be bought directly as a seasonal basket or ordered individually. Organic cultivation and seasonality describe different aspects: the growing method and the selection available throughout the year. Check current ordering and collection options before your visit.
There is also a picnic area in the Reculée de Grusse-Val-Sonnette. Check its condition before your visit. This lets you consider buying seasonal produce directly and taking a break in the landscape as two different practical options during your stay.
