In Mouchard, the things to discover range from an exhibition on wood processing to a geological hiking trail and signposted cycling routes. An orchard adds to the offering with insights into the processing of organic fruit. When choosing your accommodation, you can first consider whether culture, cycling, hiking or local produce will shape your stay.
Train station and practical planning
Mouchard train station has a TER ticket machine and bicycle parking, including a secure bicycle shelter. As station services can change, check the latest information before travelling. The station is also relevant to the Mouchard option on the Zed Jurassien: this route ends at a station in the town.
Wood processing at the Maison du Bois et de la ForĂȘt
The Maison du Bois et de la ForĂȘt was established in 1993 as a museum exhibition venue in the CitĂ© du Bois area of Mouchard. Covering 250 mÂČ, it displays wood-processing machines and tools, as well as more than 450 wood samples from around the world. It also features a workshop from the 1940s that is still operational. The exhibition therefore covers everything from practical processing to the diversity of wood species. The Maison du Bois et de la ForĂȘt is accessible to people with reduced mobility; check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Cycling routes and their endpoints
The Voie des Salines is a 38 km cycling route leading to Mouchard and connecting the UNESCO saltworks of Arc-et-Senans and Salins-les-Bains. It crosses the ForĂȘt de Chaux and then follows the Loue Valley. The route thus connects the two saltworks through two distinct landscapes.
The Zed Jurassien is a fully signposted 124 km mountain biking route. It ends either in Arc-et-Senans or Mouchard. With the Mouchard option, the endpoint is at a train station; from there, the starting point of Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux can be reached on the Hirondelles tourist train line. Another cycling connection is the Port-Lesney to Poligny stage of the Tour du Jura Vélo Loisirs, which passes through Mouchard. To make an initial comparison of the options, consider both the route length and the different route types: a cycling route for the Voie des Salines and a mountain biking route for the Zed Jurassien.
Geology on foot and fruit from Mouchard
The GĂ©ologie hiking trail starts at Mouchardâs church square and passes through a Jurassic landscape of limestone and marl. A viewpoint about 100 m away helps visitors understand the arrangement and structure of the rock layers by observing the landscape. Its geological focus makes the trail a distinctive way to discover the area.
Aux Pâtits PĂ©pins is an orchard in Mouchard where you can visit the production and processing of fresh organic fruit. Sales, visits and tastings are available by prior reservation only. The products on offer include table grapes, orchard fruit such as pears, apples and figs, berries, sorbets, ice cream and fruit juices. Product availability may vary by season.
