Plasne offers a tangible starting point for a discovery trip in the Jura: the Les Délices du Plateau cooperative cheese dairy is located in the village on the first plateau of the Jura Mountains, at an altitude of 600 metres and within the AOP production area for Comté and Morbier. There are also hiking options with different connections to the village, religious heritage in Petit Plasne and a historic washhouse at a spring outlet. This makes it easy to plan your stay around specific features of the area—from the cheese dairy and trails to architectural history.
Cheese dairy and local cheesemaking tradition
Visits to Les Délices du Plateau include a tour of the cooperative’s production workshop and its ageing cellars. Booking requirements and opening times may change; check both before planning a visit. As early as before 1940, two cooperative cheese dairies in the village had been making Comté for many years. This means cheese in Plasne has both a visitor and a historical dimension: the tour takes you into the workshop and ageing cellars, while the former production is part of the village’s history.
Hiking routes with different connections to the village
When choosing a route, it is worth distinguishing between a walking stage through the village, a circular hike and a mountain-bike route heading towards Plasne. The walking stage of the “Échappée Jurassienne” from Poligny to Passenans passes through Plasne. The “Panoramas around Plasne” circular hike alternates in sections with the GR®59 (“Échappée jurassienne”); in suitable weather, the views stretch as far as the snow-covered Alps. The mountain-bike stage of the “Échappée Jurassienne” from Poligny to Château-Chalon heads towards the village of Plasne. The routes mentioned therefore offer different connections to the village: the walking stage passes through it, the mountain-bike stage heads towards it, and the circular hike combines its route with potential long-distance views. Check trail conditions before setting out so your plans reflect the current state of the route.
Church, washhouse and village festival
The Église Saint-Donat is in the Petit Plasne neighbourhood and is part of the Jura’s religious heritage. Its address is Rue du Paradis, 39800 Plasne. Below the village and below the hamlet of Petit Plasne, the Lavoir de Plasne stands beside a spring outlet. A spring collection basin lies beneath a vaulted stone roof; a larger basin is fed by the spring’s overflow. It served as a washhouse and possibly also as a public watering trough for livestock. The spring collection and overflow basin give the historic structure its distinctive architectural form.
The village festival is also part of Plasne’s cultural life: the “Plasnimation” association organises it every year. As dates and programmes vary, check both in advance if you would like to plan your visit around the festival. Along with the cheese dairy, hiking trails and heritage, the festival offers another way to experience the village—with a recurring event whose specific programme changes from year to year.
