When planning a visit to Blois-Sur-Seille, it is worth taking a closer look at the different hiking routes: two relatively easy circular trails are offered alongside a route rated difficult. There are also traces of the village’s history, from the former milk cableway to the dates on the church and cemetery cross.

Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Difficulty

The Sentier des pierres sèches comprises two circular trails described as relatively easy. The shorter loop is 2.5 kilometres long and passes eight huts; the longer one measures 5.15 kilometres and includes twelve huts. Along the way are shepherds’ huts, known as Cabordes, and dry-stone walls called “Murgers”. The two distances and the number of huts offer a concrete comparison without requiring you to estimate a walking time.

The La Reculée de Blois-sur-Seille circular hike is classified differently: it is six kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours, and is rated difficult. Its themes are geology and nature; it also carries the “Boucles Échappée Jurassienne” label. The trail starts at the village square beside the lower station of the former milk cableway. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The designated hiking network also includes a section of the GR 59 between Château-Chalon and La Marre, as well as two PDIPR trails via Côte du Chaumois Martin and Vieux Mont. For planning your day, distinguishing between the relatively easy loops on the Sentier des pierres sèches and the Reculée loop rated difficult is more useful than comparing distances alone: for the latter, both the approximate duration and difficulty level are given.

The Milk Cableway, the Church and Dry-Stone Construction

The Blois-sur-Seille milk cableway is considered unique in France. It was used to transport milk to the village cheese dairy, where it was made into Comté. It therefore connects the village’s history with its former cheesemaking tradition. The name of the Sentier des pierres sèches points to another local theme: the Cabordes and Murgers make traditional building techniques part of the trail description.

At Saint-Gilles Church, the date 1670 inscribed on a holy water stoup appears to correspond to the construction of the church. The side aisles were built in 1808. The date given on the cemetery cross by the church is 1765. These dates provide different points of reference: the attribution of 1670 remains uncertain, while 1808 refers to the side aisles and 1765 to the cross.

Limestone Landscape and Natura 2000 Site

Water has fractured the limestone of the local plateau, forming deep lapiaz grooves. There are numerous springs at the foot of the Reculée cliffs; some made it possible to build fountains in the village. Rivulets, streams and brooks from the surrounding area feed the Seille River. Together, these details describe the landscape through its geological features and waterways, without reducing it to a single viewpoint.

Blois-sur-Seille is one of the communes within the 1,420-hectare Reculées de la haute Seille Natura 2000 site. Its habitats include forests, rocky habitats, running waters, tufa springs, natural and semi-natural grasslands, and caves. Species listed as occurring in the area include the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo). In this way, the specific themes of geology and nature along the trails connect with the wider landscape to which the village belongs.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Blois-Sur-Seille, you can plan your outings around the stated differences between the trails. The Sentier des pierres sèches offers two relatively easy circular trails of different lengths; for La Reculée, an approximate duration and difficulty level are also given. If you are particularly interested in building history, there are also several clearly identified points of interest: the Cabordes and Murgers along the trail, the milk cableway, Saint-Gilles Church and the cemetery cross.
