Grange-de-Vaivre lies on the Loue and along the Besançon–Lons-le-Saunier route. Its visitor attractions range from the river landscape to traces of the salt pipeline and the cheeses of the Fromagerie du Val de Loue. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay on nature, salt history or regional food. The river, the preserved heritage and the opportunity to sample cheese at the dairy each offer a different way to experience the area.
The Loue and the river landscape
The Loue borders Grange-de-Vaivre. Near Grange-de-Vaivre and Port-Lesney, the river reaches the Jura département. The Natura 2000 bird protection area “Vallées de la Loue et du Lison” (FR4312009) extends across part of the municipality. The protected-area designation therefore applies to part of the municipality, not to the whole area in general.
Willows and hay meadows shape the landscape across the wider floodplain. In this broader floodplain area, tree frogs (Hyla arborea) with confirmed or probable breeding were recorded between 2006 and 2022. This landscape perspective complements the direct connection to the Loue: nature-related information here concerns both the riverside and a larger floodplain area.
Kayakers also particularly appreciate the Loue near Grange-de-Vaivre and Port-Lesney. Water levels are crucial when planning a paddling trip, as conditions can vary. Those who prefer to travel on foot can find Grange-de-Vaivre listed on the Sentier des Gabelous. This salt-route trail is just over 20 kilometres long and runs between Salins-les-Bains and Arc-et-Senans. Check trail conditions before setting out; kayakers should take water levels into account.
The salt pipeline and salt route
The salt pipeline was intended to carry brine from Salins-les-Bains to Arc-et-Senans. Its surviving masonry structures were listed as historic monuments by an order dated 29 December 2009. The planned purpose of transporting brine provides the structure’s historical context, while the surviving sections offer a tangible connection to the area.
A surviving passage of the salt pipeline lies beneath Route de Lyon near the Furieuse, on the border with Grange-de-Vaivre. It is a precisely located point of reference for the structure’s history. The Sentier des Gabelous offers another way to explore the salt routes: Grange-de-Vaivre is listed on the trail between Salins-les-Bains and Arc-et-Senans.
Cheese from the Val de Loue
The Fromagerie du Val de Loue uses exclusively organic milk and makes Comté, Morbier, Tome and Raclette. You can sample the cheeses in the dairy’s shop. This provides a specific culinary option to complement the area’s nature and heritage attractions. If you want to make a tasting part of your plans, check current arrangements before your visit.
Planning depends on several factors here: the route and conditions matter on the Sentier des Gabelous, water levels matter when kayaking, and visiting the shop matters for cheese tasting. You can choose the focus of your stay—river, salt history or cheese—without combining all the different themes into a single outing.
