Haut-Du-Them-Château-Lambert can be understood through three clear points of reference: Ballon de Servance, the source of the Ognon, and the trails around the village and its heritage. The commune is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. At 1,216 metres, Ballon de Servance is both the highest point in the commune and in the Haute-Saône département. The Ognon rises in Château-Lambert. Together, these details provide a factual framework for planning a trip: landscape, hiking and regional history sit alongside the village’s exhibitions and activities.
Hiking trails with different features
The trails can be distinguished by their stated features. The La Tour du Chaume circular trail starts at the Haut-du-Them fitness trail, is 7.8 km long, and passes through the village to viewpoints and heritage sites at the foot of Ballon de Servance. Le Maillebourg starts in Haut-du-Them-Château-Lambert. A family-friendly walking trail, it alternates between wooded paths and small roads and takes in the village’s natural and cultural heritage at the foot of Ballon de Servance.
The Sentier des écoliers also starts in Haut-du-Them-Château-Lambert. It follows the route that pupils once took to school in Belmont and offers viewpoints over the valley. The three trails therefore differ in their focus: viewpoints and village heritage, a mix of path types, or the historic link with the school route to Belmont. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Mining, woodland crafts and village history
The Musée Départemental Demard de la Montagne presents the history of village life before the major changes brought about by the First World War. Outside the buildings, a hillside trail explores forestry and woodworking occupations, including charcoal making, clog making and pit-sawing with a long saw.
Mining is also part of local history: the former copper and silver-bearing lead mines of Château-Lambert were worked from 1374 to 1768. The Musée de la Montagne also presents the work associated with mining copper, silver-bearing lead and molybdenum.
