Montboillon can be explored through specific cultural and natural sites. The Circuit du patrimoine begins and ends in the village; the Vallon de Fontenelay regional nature reserve extends across Montboillon and Bucey-lès-Gy. There is also a mountain biking loop with its own starting point at the town hall. This gives you different options when planning your stay: an easy walking route focusing on history and craftsmanship, a challenging cycling loop, and a landscape whose most sensitive areas are not set up to receive visitors.

Heritage along the trail

The Circuit du patrimoine de Montboillon is an easy 3 km walking route that starts and ends in Montboillon. The loop takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Thirteen information panels cover the built, natural and craft heritage. The trail therefore offers several perspectives on local heritage, rather than focusing on a single building. Its length, difficulty rating and approximate duration give you a concrete framework for planning a walk as part of your stay.

Another cultural landmark is the Church of Saint-Nicolas, rebuilt in 1830. It retains its original furnishings and decoration, including two paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries and copper chandeliers from the 18th century. These features give the church its own historical dimension alongside the trail’s themes: the focus here is on the preserved furnishings and decorative details, while the Circuit du patrimoine panels also cover natural and craft heritage.

Landscape and nature reserve

Montboillon lies in the wooded landscape of the Monts de Gy. Ponds dot the municipal area, which is also crossed by numerous streams. This landscape provides the setting for nature-related interests beyond the heritage trail.

The 42-hectare Vallon de Fontenelay regional nature reserve comprises meadows, deciduous forests, marl grasslands and fens. Twenty orchid species have been recorded in the reserve, including the bee orchid and the marsh helleborine. The different habitats and documented biodiversity give the Vallon a distinctive natural history. The reserve can be reached via walking trails or mountain biking loops. However, an important restriction to bear in mind when planning a visit is that the reserve’s core and most sensitive areas are not set up to receive visitors.

On foot or by mountain bike

Mountain biking loop 59, “Vauvenise,” starts at Montboillon town hall. It is 18 km long, has 350 metres of elevation gain and is rated difficult. This makes it clearly different from the easy, 3 km Circuit du patrimoine: the heritage trail is a walking route with an approximate duration of two and a half hours, while the Vauvenise loop is a longer, challenging mountain biking route. An approximate time is given for the heritage trail; the MTB loop’s length, elevation gain and difficulty rating indicate its level of challenge.

If you are looking for a holiday rental, this distinction can help you decide: would you prefer a stay focused on an easy cultural walk or a challenging cycling tour? The church, trail and reserve add cultural and natural history interests to your options. When visiting the Vallon de Fontenelay, also bear in mind that its most sensitive areas have limited public access.
