Champlitte can be explored through its culture, landscape and wine tradition. The Musée départemental Albert Demard focuses on the rural and artisanal life of a small town in the 19th century; a walking trail leads through vineyards, murgers and gardens. Other highlights include a museum dedicated to the history of technology, the Couvent des Augustins, the weekly market and wine-related experiences. When planning your visit, you can choose to focus on museum themes, local history, a walk or a particular market day.

Museums and historic buildings

The Musée départemental Albert Demard was officially founded in 1957 at the Château de Champlitte and became a departmental museum in 1963. Its 45 rooms showcase the rural and artisanal life of a small town in the 19th century. The Musée Départemental Demard des Techniques takes a different approach: it explains technological changes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries through steam power, the internal combustion engine and electricity. The two museums therefore offer different perspectives: one on everyday life and crafts in a small town, the other on technological changes through three specific examples.

The Couvent des Augustins adds the history of a monastery to these historical themes. Jean de Vergy, Lord of Champlitte, founded it in 1399. Two wings of the 15th-century cloister have survived. Its founding and surviving cloister wings thus relate to two successive centuries. Guided visits are subject to a clear condition: they are available by prior arrangement only. If you plan to take a guided tour, make sure to arrange a time in advance.

Walk and limestone landscape

The Sentier d'interprétation des pierres sèches is a 2.2 km walking trail that takes about one hour and 15 minutes. The route leads through vineyards, murgers and gardens. Its length and approximate duration give you two different points of reference for planning your day: the distance describes the route, while the time indicates the estimated time needed. Treat the duration as a guide, not as an exact schedule.

Les Lavières in Champlitte is a local heritage area. In the past, flat limestone slabs were quarried there for roofs and dry-stone walls. This adds another perspective: while the museums explore ways of life and technology, Les Lavières points to the former use of limestone. Both themes relate to local history, but in different ways.

Via Francigena: a different scale

Champlitte is an important stop on the Via Francigena, a Council of Europe Cultural Route connecting Canterbury and Rome. Compared with the local walking trail, the points of reference are different: the Sentier has a stated distance and approximate duration, while the Via Francigena is defined by its European route and the connection between its endpoints. This helps distinguish a walk with a set duration from a cultural route on a broader geographical scale, without planning them as the same outing.

Market and wine tradition

Champlitte’s weekly market brings about ten vendors together on the town hall square every Tuesday morning from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. If the market is important to your travel dates, check the schedule before your trip. The Fête de la Saint-Vincent celebrates local wines and is an annual tradition that has been held for more than 400 years. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific festival date in advance.

The Domaine Henriot also offers a wine-related experience: visitors are welcomed in the cellars by prior arrangement. Workshops for children are also offered there. Confirm the availability of the workshop program before your visit. Market hours, festival dates and arranging a cellar visit are separate planning considerations; the preparation you need will depend on which experience matters to you.
