The Château de Sagey is the shared starting and ending point for three named routes in Pierrefontaine-les-Varans: Vautran, Crêtes and Route Cascade de Vermondans No. 44. Alongside its connections to hiking, the area is shaped by a historic church, rocky landscapes and waterways, and regional cheese offerings. Your choices can therefore focus on different trail profiles, landscapes and geology, as well as culture and Comté.

Church and History

The church in Pierrefontaine-les-Varans was listed as a Monument historique by decree on 13 June 1991. Its main construction campaign took place in the last quarter of the 18th century; construction campaigns are dated to 1782 and 1787. These dates can thus be placed within a broader construction period. The Moulin de Vermondans has also existed since the 14th century.

Hiking with Different Trail Profiles

The Vautran hiking trail is a challenging, 13.2-kilometre PR loop. It leads to the Grotte de la Glacière du Roi. The Crêtes hiking trail is 8.9 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty; it leads to a monument honouring the Forces Françaises de l’Intérieur. Distance and difficulty give you two concrete points of comparison, while the cave and monument indicate different destinations on the two trails. Route Cascade de Vermondans No. 44 also starts and ends at the Château de Sagey. Check current trail and access conditions before setting out.

Rock, Water and Landscape

At 947 metres, the Belvédère du Belmont is the highest point in the commune and offers a view over the valley. The Roche Percée lies in the Parc naturel régional du Doubs Horloger and faces southeast. There are climbing routes there graded from 3 to 7a, for beginners and intermediate-level climbers. If climbing is of interest to you, check the route conditions and safety advice before using them.

At the Cascade du Val, the rock’s different colours and layers are visible; calcareous tufa forms below the waterfall. There is a prepared spot for a short stop or a family picnic; its facilities may change. The Cascade du Moulin de Vermondans lies between Plaimbois-Vennes and Pierrefontaine-les-Varans. It plunges 25 metres and forms tufa deposits. The Rêverotte valley between Pierrefontaine-les-Varans and Gigot is a protected natural area along a clear, shaded river. Check access and environmental conditions before visiting.

Comté and Activities

The Fruitière de Pierrefontaine-les-Varans offers free tours by prior arrangement, including for groups and school classes. Advance booking is therefore part of planning this visit. The Fromagerie de Pierrefontaine-les-Varans offers four varieties of Comté, as well as other regional AOP cheeses, including Morbier and Bleu de Gex. The selection may change.

As another activity, Pierrefont’ Équitation in Pierrefontaine-les-Varans offers riding and pony lessons, rides, trail rides and holiday courses. If you are planning one of these options, check the current operating conditions in advance. This makes it possible to choose cultural visits, a hike, climbing routes or a riding activity as different focal points, depending on your interests.
