In Les Fourgs, it’s easy to plan your trip around the season and the type of activity you enjoy: cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take center stage in winter. Viewpoints, mountain biking and chapels offer other ways to explore the area and its history. The distances listed refer to different offerings—a useful distinction when planning.

Winter in Les Fourgs: cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails

The Grande Traversée du Jura cross-country ski route passes through Les Fourgs; the section from Les Verrières to Les Fourgs is 13 km long. The Les Fourgs–L’Herba Nordic area also has the 9.6 km Le Mont de l’Herba cross-country ski trail. For snowshoeing, the area has seven trails totaling 41 km, open to hikers. The figures describe different things: 13 km is a section of the Grande Traversée, 9.6 km is the length of one cross-country ski trail, and 41 km is the combined length of seven snowshoe trails.

At Les Rangs, there is a 50 m-long moving walkway, a snowmaking system and a sledding run. Snow conditions and seasonal operations can change, so check current conditions and whether the facilities are operating before your trip.

Viewpoints, trails and outdoor activities

The Belvédère de la Roche Sarrazine offers views of the Plateau d’Arlier, Château de Joux, Larmont, Grand Taureau and Fort Malher. In summer, the viewpoint is accessible on foot and by mountain bike; in winter, it can be reached on snowshoes. Les Fourgs is also suitable for walks and hikes on foot, as well as mountain biking.

The Stade VTT FFC de la Coupe has mountain bike loops graded green, blue and red. It also has green, blue and red pump tracks. The color grades refer to two different formats here: loops and pump tracks. Disc golf, Explor Games and Cani-Rando are other seasonal leisure activities in Les Fourgs. Check which seasonal activities are available on your travel dates before planning.

The Mont des Verrières Route—No. 2—also passes by the Tourbière et Prairies des Placettes in the Les Fourgs area; hiking is listed as an activity there. Check information about the route and area before your visit.

Chapels and border history

The Chapelle du Touriau links local history with a striking building. It was inaugurated in 1925, after the residents of Les Fourgs vowed to build a chapel if the village were spared the ravages of war. Its recognized historical and artistic value is reflected in the colored roof shingles with diamond patterns and the cross. From the chapel, the view extends over Les Fourgs, CrĂŞt du Vourbey and the Swiss mountain range.

Information panels along the Sentier des Bornes explain the historic border between Les Fourgs and Sainte-Croix. The local history of cross-border smuggling involves goods such as watches, lace, horses and tobacco. The Oratoire de Notre-Dame des Buclés lies on a former processional route linking the village with the Chapelle de Montpetot.

In the wider area around Les Fourgs, an easy circular walk follows the Route de la Corne to the Chapelle Saint-Claude in Chapelle Mijoux. The chapel was built in 1705; the circular walk is a separate excursion in the wider area, not a route that starts in Les Fourgs.

Choose your travel dates based on what you want to do

When planning, it’s worth first distinguishing between winter routes and the other outdoor and cultural activities. Cross-country skiing, snowshoe trails and the sledding run have different distances and seasonal conditions. The Belvédère has different access options depending on the season, while the chapels and border history offer a different focus. So, if you’re looking for a hotel in Les Fourgs, the season and activities you’re interested in can help guide your choice of destination.
