Explore Arc-Et-Senans through specific cultural themes: the history of the Saline royale as a saltworks, its architecture, the Musée Claude Nicolas Ledoux, the gardens of Un Cercle Immense and the Église Sainte-Bénigne. You can choose different focuses for your stay—from industrial history and architecture to gardens and sacred art.

The Saline royale: history and design concept

The Saline royale was built as a saltworks at the request of Louis XV; construction took place between 1775 and 1779. Designed as an integrated factory, it was laid out in the shape of a semicircle. The eleven buildings housed production areas and workers’ accommodation. Architecture, production and living quarters were thus part of a shared historical concept. The semicircle is more than just a striking shape: it organizes the site’s different functions and makes its industrial purpose clear.

In 1982, the Saline royale was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Arc-Et-Senans is the modern and utopian extension of the Grande Saline de Salins-les-Bains. This relationship places the Saline in the broader historical context of saltworks and their architectural ideas. The construction period, factory layout and World Heritage listing thus offer several ways to understand the site’s history.

Ledoux, models and digital interpretation

The Musée Claude Nicolas Ledoux is the only museum in Europe dedicated to an architect. Around 60 models illustrate Claude Nicolas Ledoux’s built and unrealized work. Including both categories draws attention not only to architecture that was realized, but also to projects that were never built.

The HistoPad offers another perspective: visitors can use it to explore the 18th-century Saline royale in augmented reality and encounter the salt workers. While the models show Ledoux’s built and unrealized work, the HistoPad focuses on the Saline in its historical period. The themes therefore differ in their approach: architectural designs in the museum, and the saltworks in the digital experience.

Gardens and Église Sainte-Bénigne

The gardens of Un Cercle Immense comprise a garden of medicinal and aromatic plants, a garden of the Jura arc, a willow garden and an ecological vegetable garden. Their names make the different focuses concrete: medicinal and aromatic plants, the Jura arc, willows and vegetable growing. The garden areas thus complement the factory’s history with another way to engage with the site’s themes.

The Église Sainte-Bénigne was built by the architect Max Painchaux and consecrated in 1852. The church contains ten works of art from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its construction history and art collection bring together two different historical perspectives. Self-guided visits are possible at any time.
