In Arc-et-Senans, the history of salt production meets Ledoux’s architecture. The Saline royale was built between 1775 and 1779 as a salt factory on the orders of Louis XV; Claude-Nicolas Ledoux was its architect. In 1982, UNESCO added the complex to its World Heritage List.

Saline royale: factory and architecture

The Saline was designed as an integrated factory where almost the entire workforce lived. Residential and production areas were arranged across a total of eleven buildings, which together formed a semicircle. Ledoux’s design can therefore be considered not only as an architectural form, but also as an organisation of a place of work and residence.

The history of salt extends beyond Arc-et-Senans: from 1780 to 1895, salt water from the Grande Saline in Salins-les-Bains was conveyed to the Royal Saltworks through 21 kilometres of wooden pipes. This historic connection makes the link between the two places tangible and situates the complex within the regional history of salt production.

The Claude Nicolas Ledoux Museum is described as the only museum in Europe dedicated to an architect. It focuses on the work of the creator of the Saline royale and presents around 60 models from his work. Another historic landmark is the Château de Roche in Arc-et-Senans: since 21 February 1974, it has been partially protected as a Monument historique.

Church art and visiting arrangements

The Church of Saint-Bénigne contains ten works from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a Stations of the Cross made of repoussé leather. Self-guided visits are available at all times; guided visits take place by appointment. If you plan to take a guided tour, confirm the appointment before your trip.

Landscape and nature trails

The landscape around the Saline is also shaped by specific conservation and landscaping initiatives. The Saline royale is part of the “Refuges LPO” network and has been designated an “Espace Naturel Sensible” by the département since 2011. Since June 2022, landscaping has complemented the five-hectare visitor trail.

Opened in 2025, the nature trail invites visitors to discover the sensory experience of biodiversity in the context of the buildings, gardens and neighbouring hay meadows. While the visitor trail is described in terms of its area and the additional landscaping, the nature trail focuses specifically on biodiversity and its surroundings.

Getting there and routes between the towns

The Arc-et-Senans TER station is 100 metres from the Saline royale. This provides a specific point of reference for travelling to this cultural destination. Check the TER timetable for your travel date.

The Sentier des Gabelous offers a different way to get around: it runs from Salins-les-Bains to Arc-et-Senans and can be used on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. This distinguishes it from the trails at the Saline, which focus on visitor and nature themes. These three modes of transport offer different ways to include the connection between the two places in your travel plans.
