Santa-Maria-Siché consists of several hamlets situated at an altitude of around 500 metres. Churches, a fortified house and the birthplace of Vannina d’Ornano provide tangible points of reference for the area’s history. There is also a named hiking trail and a classical music and polyphony festival scheduled for August. If you are planning your trip around cultural history, architectural styles or hiking, you will find several distinct highlights.

Churches and their architectural styles

The Chapelle Sainte-Lucie, formerly called Santa Maria Assunta de Sicché, is a Romanesque chapel dating from the 10th century. It is also the former parish church of the Assumption of Mary. The present-day parish church of the same name was built as a replacement in the last quarter of the 19th century. It has a nave and two aisles, covered by groin vaults.

The Chapelle Sainte-Réparate is located in the hamlet of Siché and is also called Santa Reparata or Santa Liberata. It may date from the first half of the 19th century. Its single-nave hall and slightly recessed choir are covered by a barrel vault with lunettes; the bell tower has an open, round-arched sound opening. The spatial layout differs from that of the parish church: at the Church of the Assumption, the nave and aisles define the building, while Sainte-Réparate has a nave and choir. A groin vault is formed where two barrel vaults intersect; lunettes are smaller vaulted surfaces that cut into a barrel vault.

The construction dates span a long historical period: the Chapelle Sainte-Lucie dates from the 10th century, the Palazzu de Sampiero Corso from the 16th century, and the parish church from the last quarter of the 19th century. Sainte-Réparate may date from the first half of the 19th century; this dating remains uncertain.

Local history and historic houses

Santa-Maria-Siché is the birthplace of Vannina d’Ornano; her birthplace can still be seen. The Palazzu de Sampiero Corso is a fortified house dating from the 16th century. Its single-arm drawbridge moves a footbridge—a structural detail that, alongside the churches, illustrates another aspect of the area’s architectural history. The Palazzu is in a hamlet near the town centre and can be reached in a few steps from the D2 or D2B. If you wish to visit the building, check access in advance.

Hiking trail and August festival

The Sentier A Santamariaccia connects Campo, Quasquara, Bocca di Foce and Bocca di Sant’ Antone. For travellers seeking a hiking option as well as sacred architecture, the trail is a highlight in its own right.

A classical music and polyphony festival is scheduled to take place in Santa-Maria-Siché in August. The churches and the Palazzu represent architectural history, the Sentier offers hiking, and the festival provides a possible August event. If you are planning your travel dates around the music event, check the specific event dates in advance.
