A Romanesque church ruin at the site of the original village, a parish church dating from 1763 and fortified houses from the 16th century give Cognocoli-Monticchi a distinctive historical setting. These are joined by a contemporary work of art in Marato’s square, chapels with different connections to San Vincenti, and winegrowing. Together with the Taravo, they create a multifaceted picture of the area, bringing culture, history and landscape together.

The Taravo and the landscape

The Taravo is one of the most important waterways flowing through Cognocoli-Monticchi. The river is therefore a tangible landscape feature within the municipality. It offers a different perspective when choosing a destination than the individual historical landmarks: here, the focus is on a waterway; there, on architectural history, religious sites and art. If you are weighing up different themes for a trip, you can view the Taravo as the landscape aspect of the area and the cultural sites as its historical focus.

Churches and architectural history

The parish church of Saint-Nicolas in Cognocoli-Monticchi was built in 1763. In Poghju, the Église San Vincenti stands as a Romanesque church ruin at the site of the original village. The ruin and the Chapel of San Vincenti in Monticchi are two separate landmarks: the chapel in Monticchi is dedicated to San Vincenti and has been restored. Their different names and locations help distinguish these church landmarks.

The fortified houses of prominent families in Cognocoli-Monticchi date from the 16th century. Compared with the parish church of 1763, they reveal another historical period: the houses date back to the 16th century, while the church belongs to a later phase of construction. The residential architecture and the church buildings thus represent different periods. This provides more than a single historical point of reference for understanding the area.

The remains of the Chapel of Santa Degna mark an earlier period. They lie on a rocky promontory at the centre of a Bronze Age enclosure; the site overlooked the lower valley. The combination of chapel remains, enclosure and valley views sets Santa Degna apart from the structures built later. The object “Christ en croix” is also part of the cultural heritage: it was listed as a protected monument on 2 May 1984.

Art, tradition and wine

A contemporary work of art by Alexandre Périgot has been on display in Marato’s square since 2004. It adds a contemporary note alongside the older religious and architectural landmarks. The cultural perspective thus spans Bronze Age traces and Romanesque architecture to a work of art whose exhibition began in 2004. If you want to understand Cognocoli-Monticchi through more than its churches, this offers another connection to art.

A patron-saint festival is associated with the Chapel of San Vincenti in Monticchi. A 2025 guidebook describes it as taking place annually on 22 January. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the current programme in advance.

The Domaine de Vaccelli in Aja-Donica, in Cognocoli-Monticchi, produces red, white and rosé wines from traditional grape varieties. The varieties mentioned include Sciaccarellu and Niellucciu. The three wine colours and the named grape varieties give the subject of wine a specific connection alongside the historical and cultural highlights. For details about visitor arrangements, enquire before your trip.
