Soccia is built amphitheatrically on a mountain ridge. The hiking trail to Lac de Creno starts at a monumental cross above the village; there is a large car park at the trailhead. This gives you two distinct ways to plan your trip: explore the village’s setting or start a hike from a clearly identified trailhead.
Forest Lake, Wet Meadows and Mountain Pastures
Lac de Creno is the lowest-altitude lake in Corsica and the island’s only lake in a forest landscape. The regional natural park places it in Ortu. Around the lake, wet meadows in a forest of Laricio pines are home to the rare, protected round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia). The lakeside setting thus brings together a distinctive forest landscape and a notable plant species.
The surrounding natural landscape forms a cirque around the small Izzola Valley. The municipal area is suitable for pastoral farming and has extensive mountain pastures bordering Niolu. The lakeside and pastoral landscapes offer contrasting features: forest and wet meadows on one hand, and extensive mountain pastures and their proximity to Niolu on the other.
Church and Cultural Traditions
The parish church of Sainte Marie, also known as the Church of the Assumption of Mary, has a bell tower with a lantern. It houses an 1872 altarpiece entitled “The Virgin and Child,” after Raphael; the work is listed as a historic monument. The tower reflects the church’s architecture, while the altarpiece is a work with a specific date of creation and monument status.
The pilgrimage to Saint Elisée is part of the area’s religious tradition: it traditionally takes place on August 29 and is associated with the chapel above Lac de Creno. If you are interested in religious traditions, you can make a note of this date as a specific focus.
Hiking Trail and Historic Route
The Strada Antica is a separate trail to explore. It once connected Soccia with Corte and was an important transhumance route. From the mouth of the Liamone, it passed through central Corsica, followed the Tavignanu Valley and went via Pastricciola. Unlike the hiking trail to Lac de Creno, which starts above the village, it represents a broader historic connection.
Activities and Seasonal Conditions
Swimming in the river is possible within the municipal area of Soccia; conditions vary by season. A canyoning descent in Zoïcu Canyon includes jumps, natural slides, a zip line and abseiling. The features included may vary depending on the route and conditions. A sporty option and a family option are offered for the canyon; availability may vary by season.
The activities also differ in terms of planning: for river swimming, seasonal conditions are key; for canyoning, the route and seasonal availability of the options are important.
