Fozzano offers several distinct ways to explore the area: the architectural history of the Tour Carabelli, its literary connection to “Colomba” and the long-distance Mare a Mare Sud hiking trail. There are also views over the Baracci Valley and a demonstration of woodworking for visitors. When planning your stay, you can choose how to balance cultural heritage, scenery and hiking.

Cultural heritage spanning architecture and literature

The Tour Carabelli, also known as “Torra Vecchia,” is the Carabelli family’s tower house and was built in the 15th century. Its main structure is made of granite and rubble masonry. It was listed as a historic monument by decree on 3 July 1952.

Fozzano inspired Prosper Mérimée to write his famous “Colomba.” The vendetta between the Carabelli and Durazzo families raged from 1820 to 1860 and inspired Mérimée’s work. The literary trail thus also leads to a family rivalry clearly defined in time.

The Church of the Annunciation also has a 17th-century chapel. Compared with the Tour Carabelli, built in the 15th century, it reflects a later period of construction. These two named buildings thus help place two different centuries of the area’s history.

The Maison de Colomba is currently closed to the public. Check access again before a possible visit, and do not plan on visiting the Maison as a place that is currently open to the public.

Hiking and views around Fozzano

The Mare a Mare Sud passes through Fozzano. The section managed by the PNRC runs from there to the Arbellara junction. Near Fozzano, the Mare a Mare Sud is a 73-kilometre long-distance hiking trail with five stages, connecting Porto-Vecchio and Propriano.

These details refer to different scopes: the 73 kilometres and five stages describe the long-distance trail, while the section to the Arbellara junction refers specifically to the route from Fozzano. This distinction is useful when planning your hike; trail conditions may change.

The Mare a Mare Sud offers views between the sea and the mountains. Fozzano offers open views over the Baracci Valley and the Gulf of Valinco; the village also overlooks the landscape as far as Campomoro. The route’s general sea-and-mountain views are thus complemented by specific geographical landmarks around Fozzano.

Woodworking as another reason to visit

At Legnu Nustrale, visitors can watch the items being made. The objects are crafted from local woods, including heather, olive and juniper. If you plan to attend a demonstration, check the visiting arrangements before you travel.

The focus on craftsmanship sets this apart from the other topics: here, the emphasis is on making objects from the woods listed above, while the Tour Carabelli and the church are specific buildings and “Colomba” belongs to literary history. This lets you tailor your plans to your interests.
