Church art, wine and walking each offer a different way to experience Les Riceys. For a church visit, the choice is clear: of the town’s three churches, Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens in Ricey-Bas is open to visitors. Other highlights include the history of the Château de Ricey-Bas, three wine appellations and the Cadoles circular trail, which has three route lengths. You can choose the focus of your stay according to the interests that matter most to you.
Church Art and Architectural History
Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens houses two stained-glass windows from the 16th century and a gilded Flemish wooden altarpiece dating from 1520. The date of the altarpiece is more precise than the century given for the windows. Saint-Jean-Baptiste adds another specific date to the town’s churches: it was completed in 1563.
Robert I, Lord of Les Riceys, had the first foundations of the Château de Ricey-Bas laid in 1086. A garden and a park of more than 25 hectares surround the château. These offer different historical points of reference: the early foundations of the château, the dated church furnishings and the year Saint-Jean-Baptiste was completed.
Walking Routes by Length
The Cadoles circular trail offers three walking options: 7, 14.5 and 23 kilometres. The 7 km option is the shortest, while the 23 km option is the longest; 14.5 kilometres falls between them. You can first choose according to the length of walk you have planned.
Wine and the Champagne Route
Les Riceys is listed as a southern stop on the Champagne Route through the Côte des Bar. The town is covered by three AOC appellations: Champagne, Rosé des Riceys and Coteau Champenois. Rosé des Riceys is made from Pinot Noir grapes grown on steep, well-exposed slopes. For this wine, both the grape variety and the location of the slopes are specified.
Two wine-tourism experiences are listed for 2026. At Champagne Vincent Lamoureux, the cellar visit includes a guided tasting of three cuvées. Champagne Morize offers a guided cellar visit and a tasting of three champagnes in a Cistercian cellar dating from the 11th century. The listed tastings differ in whether they feature cuvées or champagnes; at Morize, the 11th-century cellar is also part of the visit. Check booking details and availability before travelling.
Audio Guide for Getting Around
Municipal information dated 8 July 2024 listed the O-DGuide audio guide, accessed via QR codes on 23 signs at tourist points of interest. According to that information, it worked without a continuous signal and was available in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch. As the technical features and language options may change, check the latest information before your visit.
