Buchères retains the character of a rural commune and lies on the outskirts of the Troyes urban area. Two distinct themes can shape your stay: religious architectural history in the village and the “Canal de Saint-Julien” circular cycling route, which passes through Buchères. You can plan your trip around the church and chapel or a specific cycling route.

Church and chapel: distinct architectural histories

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Buchères dates from 1850 to 1853. It contains a protected cultural object. In Courgerennes stands the “Nativité de la Sainte-Vierge” chapel, a church dating from the 12th century that was remodelled in the 16th and 18th centuries. Its furnishings include fragments of 16th-century stained glass depicting the Last Judgment and the Annunciation, as well as a tabernacle in the style of Louis XIII.

The two religious buildings offer different historical points of interest: the 19th-century construction period is central to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The chapel combines a medieval origin with remodelling in two later centuries. If you are interested in architectural history, you can take this contrast in dates into account when choosing your cultural highlights.

The “Canal de Saint-Julien” circular cycling route

The circular cycling route is 19.5 km long, rated easy and has 70 m of positive elevation gain. Its first section is separate from the full route: for about 5 km, it follows the Vélovoie des Grands Lacs Seine et Aube, a route shared by pedestrians and cyclists through a rural setting. The five kilometres therefore describe part of the loop, not its total length.

The route also follows the Vélovoie des lacs on its first section. This connects Saint-Julien-les-Villas on the outskirts of Troyes with Port-Dienville on Lac d’Amance. The route thus extends beyond Buchères into the wider region, while the details on distance, difficulty rating and elevation gain describe the entire loop.

The roads and places along the route are also specified: via the RD 123 (Rue de la Gare), the loop crosses the Seine and continues to Buchères. The return route follows the RD 93 through the hamlets of Courgerennes and Villepart. The description thus clearly distinguishes the way to Buchères from the return route through the two hamlets.

More leisure activities

For exercise beyond the cycling loop, Buchères has a fitness trail and the Saint Exupéry leisure area, with outdoor exercise equipment. A children’s park adds another option to the local leisure activities. When planning, you can choose between the regional cycling route and the activities listed in the village, without combining them into a set itinerary.
