Clavy-Warby brings together striking architectural heritage, a cultural venue and a nature trail. The Château de Clavy-Warby, the Chapelle de Warby and the history of Warby reveal different sides of the place: architecture, local religious history, former industries and nature. They are complemented by a historical railway connection and direct farm sales. The choices therefore range from specific architectural details to local production and nature; you can shape your stay around cultural history, nature or food.

Château and Local History

The historic Château de Clavy-Warby is an L-shaped building arranged around a courtyard. It still has a solid round tower, the gateway of the former drawbridge and façades with loopholes. The present-day gate dates from 1644. The château also stands on the site of a former Roman outpost. In this way, an earlier connection to the site and a precisely dated present-day gate come together—two distinct time periods in the history of the place.

Chapel and Culture in Warby

Warby’s chapel also combines local history with a precise chronology. The first chapel was built in 1671 in Haute Warbies, amid a hamlet of seven houses and on Marie NOIZET’s private property; it was dedicated to Saint Claude. After the first chapel fell into disrepair in 1845, a new chapel was built within 30 days because of population growth. This links the early settlement, a religious building and a later rapid reconstruction with the growing population.

In the municipality’s 2023 cultural programme, the Chapelle de Warby was listed as one of the main venues for cultural events in Clavy-Warby, including art exhibitions and concerts. The annual “Chapelle des Arts” exhibition takes place in the chapel and is organised by the Calcin de cristal association together with the municipality. For the 2026 edition, a municipal notice from June announced 11 and 12 July, from 2 to 6 p.m. on both days, with free admission. Dates for future editions may vary; check the relevant date before travelling at a later time.

Transport History, Nature and Local Produce

The Warby spinning mill operated from 1830 to 1914. Wool from the surrounding flocks was carded there: the local history therefore includes both processing and the local origin of the raw material. The railway line running through Clavy-Warby offers another historical perspective. It opened in 1909, connected Wasigny with Mézières and carried both freight and passengers before being dismantled in 1955. The spinning mill and railway served different purposes: local processing and connections beyond the municipality.

The nature trail in Clavy-Warby, laid out in 2020–2021, has been restored with more weather-resistant signs. Its creation and the restoration of the signs are two distinct milestones in the trail’s history; it also adds a natural dimension to the historical themes.

Another local feature is La Filature on Rue du Val de Thin. The business offers direct farm sales of beef, veal and pork. Together with the former wool processing, this offers a glimpse of different aspects of the local economy: a historic business that processed wool from the surrounding area and a meat outlet in Clavy-Warby selling directly to customers.
