A surviving defensive tower, natural-stone arches from a former town mill and a hexagonal brick tower represent very different architectural styles in Coullons. There are also historic buildings, named natural areas and outdoor activities.
Town History and Distinctive Buildings
Part of the former town wall has survived in Coullons. The wall once protected the enclosed town; it is believed to have been built in 1400. Another remnant of the fortifications is the tower on Place du Paturiau. It belongs to a complex that originally comprised 16 towers. The surviving section of wall and the tower are two remaining parts of the former town fortifications.
The buildings associated with water also differ considerably. The former town mill on Rue de la Basse-Cour has semicircular natural-stone arches, with water flowing beneath the building. The Lavoir near Pont Janson was a washhouse on the banks of the Aquiaulne. There is also a watermill in the hamlet of Les Sallés, likewise on the Aquiaulne. In Coullons, water is therefore encountered both as part of mill architecture and in connection with a former washhouse.
The Grange du Prieuré is a 13th-century barn. For a long time, during floods, it provided shelter for farm livestock from the Loire Valley. The Prieuré Sainte Marie, meanwhile, is a 15th-century Benedictine priory. Its distinctive tower is hexagonal and made of brick. These different structures each make their own mark: agricultural use, monastic architecture and a striking geometric tower form.
The Château Dominuze dates from the 18th century and was extended in the 19th century. The Chapelle du Château Dominuze was built in 1788 and restored in 1827. The Église Saint-Étienne also has a long history: its present choir and sanctuary were built after a fire in the 15th century; the work was completed in 1549. Concerts are held regularly in the church today.
Local craftsmanship is also part of the area’s cultural character. Les Billots de Sologne manufactures all its products in a 1,300 m² woodworking workshop in Coullons. The company is designated an “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” and an “Artisans Ébénistes de France”. The workshop and these two designations offer a different perspective on the town’s history from its old buildings: here, woodworking and craftsmanship take centre stage.
Natural Areas and Outdoor Activities
The named natural areas associated with Coullons include the “Sologne” Natura 2000 site and two ZNIEFF sites: the “Prairie et aulnaie marécageuse de la Thielle” and the “Vallée de l’Aquiaulne”. Their names clearly distinguish the three areas. These natural areas form a separate focal point alongside Coullons’ historic buildings.
The Circuit les Quétins is an easy 11.5-kilometre route in Coullons. It is designated for hiking, VTC and mountain biking.
There are other named options for different interests: the leisure area at Plancherotte has a pétanque court on the banks of the pond. At the Ferme pédagogique L’Ecrin du Berger, visitors can discover sheep, horses, poultry and small animals. Reservations are required for a visit. At the Étang des Landes–Aquiaulne, free fishing is available at a 7.5-hectare pond. These options cater to different interests—from exercise and pétanque to visiting a farm or fishing—so you can choose according to your preferences.
