Gidy lies in the Beauce plain and combines open countryside with a long agricultural and church history. Walking and cycling routes make outdoor activities a focus of your stay; Saint-Sulpice and the Messe des Croix de Moissons add historical and local traditions. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the landscape, local history, and the event, which takes place on a specific date.

The Beauce landscape

Gidy’s rural landscape is characterised by large, flat fields, far-reaching views, and very little variation in elevation. A few small wooded areas lie at the westernmost edge of the Forêt d’Orléans. The Beauce plain is therefore an open landscape with occasional wooded sections. The connection to the Forêt d’Orléans is limited to this western edge of Gidy.

Walking and cycling routes

A shared-use path runs through Gidy between the stadium and Beaurepaire and can be used for walking and cycling. The municipality also has farm tracks and walking paths. The route between these two named points offers a specific reference point for both activities; the other paths provide additional options for walks in the area.

The history of wine and wheat

Gidy was historically shaped by wine and wheat cultivation. A specific figure is recorded for 1824: at that time, there were 125 hectares of vineyards. A small vineyard remained until the 2000s. These two details reflect different scales and periods in the local history of winegrowing—from the area under vines in the 19th century to a small vineyard that was still there much later. Along with the Beauce landscape, this agricultural past is part of the character of the area.

Saint-Sulpice through the centuries

Saint-Sulpice Church has been mentioned in written records since the 12th century. Its history also includes relics of Saints George, Clement, Honoré, and Vincent, which are kept beneath the altar cloth. The Bishop of Orléans gave them to the church in 1802. The church underwent several restorations from the 1860s to 1906. The stained-glass windows added after the Second World War depict the life of Jesus and parables from the Gospel. The documented history thus spans its mention in medieval records, later restorations, and the post-war windows.

Messe des Croix de Moissons

Since the 19th century, the Messe des Croix de Moissons has been celebrated in Gidy during the patronal festival on the second Sunday in September. Parishioners bring crosses they have made themselves from wheat ears. The Mass offers a distinct reason to visit on a specific date and adds a local tradition to the longer history of wine and wheat cultivation. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the exact date for the year you have in mind in advance.
