Châteaugiron showcases the remains of medieval fortifications, sacred architecture, works created specifically for an art venue and a range of nature sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Châteaugiron, you can plan your stay around your own interests: castle history, art and architecture, or walks and landscapes. The town’s attractions range from the Romanesque chapel in the castle to a wetland near the town centre, offering concrete points of interest for culture and nature enthusiasts.

Castle and Medieval Traces

Château de Châteaugiron is a listed historic monument and preserves significant remains of a medieval fortress. The oldest part is the Romanesque choir of the castle chapel. This allows you to explore the fortress remains and sacred architecture as distinct aspects of the castle. In summer, the tourist office organises guided tours of the Château. Outside the summer season, tours for groups and school classes are available by appointment. If you are planning a tour, check the dates and make arrangements in advance.

Art and Architectural History

The Les 3 CHA art centre brings together medieval frescoes and contemporary artworks created specifically for this venue. Its roof structure is reminiscent of an upside-down boat hull. The Prieuré Saint-Nicolas offers a different focus: the chapel, the chaplain’s quarters and the reception hall of a hospital founded in the 13th century have been preserved. At Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, the period of construction and the architect’s origins come together: Aristide Tourneux, who was from Châteaugiron, built the church in the 19th century in the Neo-Gothic style. Cat sculptures created by Arthur Regnault in 1912 sit at the four corners of its tower. The town plan also preserves medieval traces: one part of the town has changed very little and still follows the medieval layout.

The Lavoir de la Roche offers another glimpse into architectural history. The rectangular washhouse is covered on all four sides and has a slate roof. Its roof structure rests on staggered wooden posts. For more than two centuries, it was the most important washhouse in the commune of Châteaugiron.

Nature, from Walks to Wetlands

The Étang de Châteaugiron is a peaceful place for walks and offers an exceptional view of the castle. La Glaume has a different character: this three-hectare wetland lies close to the town centre and provides a habitat for birds, insects and wild plants. On two hectares, sheep of the old Avranchin breed help maintain the site through ecological grazing. These offer two distinct ways to enjoy nature: a walk with views of the castle at the Étang, and a wetland close to town that is partly maintained through grazing.

Planning Your Stay

The Pays de Châteaugiron tourist office welcomes visitors year-round, sells tickets for numerous local events and regularly offers activities introducing visitors to local heritage. If an event or tour is important to your plans, check dates and ticket availability in advance, as service details may change. The various buildings, artistic connections and nature sites let you tailor your stay to your interests.
