At the Circuit des Biez, the starting point is clearly named; the Marais Blanc is understood through its soils and water management. Also worth visiting are the Church of Saint-Méen and Sainte-Croix and the educational farm Le Mohair de la Côte d’Emeraude. These different themes give a stay in La Fresnais several possible focuses: finding your way along a marked route, landscape history, heritage and mohair production.
The Circuit des Biez
The Circuit des Biez starts at the cemetery car park in La Fresnais. Its waymarking is labelled “Circuit des biez n° 5”. The starting point and the route marker provide two specific points of reference for finding your way. Check the local signs and conditions before setting off. This lets you compare the named starting point with the waymarking on site.
Marais Blanc: soil and water
The Marais Blanc is a flat landscape at sea level, formed as the sea receded. Its white soils owe their colour to marine alluvium. A system of sluice gates regulates the water level. These features describe different aspects of the landscape: its formation explains the shape of the plain, the alluvium explains its white colour, and the sluice gates regulate the water level.
The Circuit des Biez and the Marais Blanc therefore answer different questions: the route is about its named starting point and finding your way, while the landscape is about its formation, soil and water. For planning purposes, this is a useful distinction between route-finding and interpreting the landscape.
Church and wayside cross
The Church of Saint-Méen and Sainte-Croix was built between 1893 and 1899 to plans by the architect Arthur Regnault. Its exterior has more Romanesque elements, while the interior is more Byzantine in style. These different features make its architecture more complex than a single stylistic classification. In 2015, the church was listed as a historic monument.
Another dated landmark is the Ville es Mariaux wayside cross. It dates from 1609 and has been preserved as a notable relic. In chronological terms, the cross significantly predates the church; the church was listed later. These historical reference points therefore span the early 17th century, the church’s late-19th-century construction and its listing in 2015.
Le Mohair de la Côte d’Emeraude
The educational farm Le Mohair de la Côte d’Emeraude is located at 3 rue du Bief Briand, 35111 La Fresnais. Visitors can learn about mohair production and Angora goat breeding there. The farm also has other farm animals. A video shows the process from goat to finished product, complementing the subject of breeding with the material’s journey through to the end product.
Visits are seasonal and organised by the farm operator. If you plan to visit the farm, check whether visits are available before travelling. For those interested in agricultural production, the experience combines animal breeding and processing; the specific visiting period depends on seasonal availability organised by the operator.
