Coëtlogon’s architectural heritage includes Saint-Thuriau Parish Church, Manoir le Cartier, the Château, la Retenue and historic wayside crosses. Its distinctive features include a rebuilt chapel, reused older building components and later extensions. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Coëtlogon, this history offers a tangible cultural context for choosing your destination.

The building phases of Saint-Thuriau Parish Church

Saint-Thuriau Parish Church includes a former chapel dedicated to Saint-Thuriau and Sainte-Marguerite, which was rebuilt in 1864. The church was elevated to parish church status in 1875; an extension was carried out from 1913 to 1925 to plans by the architect E. Faure.

Château and manor: site, buildings and architectural features

When considering Château, la Retenue, it is important to distinguish between an earlier castle and the later building. A castle belonging to the Marquis and knights César and Alain Emmanuel de Coëtlogon stood on this site in 1728; it burned down in 1795. Château, la Retenue was built in 1911 for Henri de _Carne. Thus, the dates 1728 and 1795 refer to the earlier castle, while 1911 dates the later building.

The residential building of Manoir, le Cartier was built in 1778 and reuses architectural features from the late 15th or early 16th century. One of the outbuildings bears the date 1716. The manor also includes a chapel, a mill and outbuildings.

Farm, wayside crosses and references to springs

Ferme, la Ville Ridorel was built in 1621. Its date provides a further chronological reference alongside the different building phases of the church and the dated buildings of the manor. Ferme, la Ville Ridorel complements the religious buildings and the manor with a farmstead as a distinct building type.

For the wayside crosses, their specific forms and locations are key. Croix de Chemin, la Pierre Longue is a monolithic cross on a square base with an altar table. Croix de Chemin, Fontaine de Saint-Thurio is associated with the Sainte-Marguerite spring and is located near the destroyed Saint-Thuriau spring. The two crosses can be distinguished by different features: the first by its shape, the second by its named associations with springs. The name Saint-Thuriau also appears in connection with the church and the spring; the respective details refer to different places and structures. A brochure from May 2023 lists the Bretagne Centre Rando app for walking routes in the region. It enables users to track walking routes and was offered as a free app for iOS and Android, in French and English. Before travelling, check its current availability and whether its routes include Coëtlogon.
