Corseul combines Gallo-Roman history with walks and outdoor destinations. At Monterfil, the remains of a commercial district take centre stage, while the Temple of Mars is a major sanctuary. A museum explores the history of the Roman town through a range of formats. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding which of these different highlights matter most to you.

Gallo-Roman history across several sites

The Temple of Mars is the largest Gallo-Roman sanctuary in Brittany. At the temple, a free interpretation trail introduces the site; the “Temple de Mars 3D” app adds audio, videos and interactive games. This means visitors can explore both the on-site trail and digital content. Check before your trip which app features are currently available.

The Monterfil archaeological site reveals a Gallo-Roman commercial district with warehouses, shops and houses. A 10 m-wide road is also part of the complex. Together, the buildings and road give an impression of daily life and the architecture of a prosperous era. Monterfil therefore draws attention to the different uses of a district, while the temple represents sacred architecture.

At the ArchéoMusée Coriosolis, archaeological collections, interactive objects and models explore the history of the Roman town. A virtual reality room focuses on the Temple of Mars. You should check in advance whether this VR experience is available. The museum offers another way to explore the history: through collections and models, rather than through the buildings and their surviving structures on site.

The Château de Montafilan offers a different perspective. The fortress was built in the 12th century by the Counts of MONTAFILAN DINAN on a steep hill surrounded by two deep, marshy valleys. The ruins lie on the other side of Corseul and make a good destination for a walk. Here, the fortress architecture and hillside setting define the site, rather than Roman town life.

Walks and practical considerations

The municipality designates the “Circuit du Temple de Mars” loop trail. As route information may be updated, check the latest details before your visit. This lets you plan your walk around the designated loop or the ruins of the Château de Montafilan, without treating the two destinations as one route.

La Vallée du Val de Gravel is a recreation area on the RD 44, suitable for family outings and picnics. Regulated fishing is also possible there. These offer different reasons to spend time outdoors: a picnic or family outing on the one hand, and fishing on the other. If you plan to fish, check local conditions and applicable permits in advance.

Free parking is available at the Temple of Mars. You can check the parking arrangements again before travelling. A Dinan Agglomération brochure from January 2025 lists the state label “Tourisme et Handicap” for the ArchéoMusée Coriosolis. The label indicates a welcome adapted to the basic needs of people with disabilities. If the label is important for your planning, confirm its current status and the conditions relevant to you before your visit.

Choose accommodation based on your travel priorities

When looking for a hotel in Corseul, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: Gallo-Roman sites, the interpretation at the ArchéoMusée, a walk to the fortress ruins or a break at Val de Gravel. Then plan your travel arrangements and check the conditions for each visit according to the places you actually want to see.
