Arlanc offers distinctly different options for planning your trip: lace-making and architectural history, the Jardin pour la Terre, the Base de loisirs, and circular walking and mountain biking routes. First decide whether you want your stay to focus more on culture, gardens or outdoor activities.
Lace-making and architectural history
The Musée de la Dentelle d’Arlanc offers guided tours exploring the bobbin lace and needle lace techniques that are particularly well established in Arlanc. The lace heritage spans handmade lace from the 16th century to the contemporary lace industry. The museum is also part of the tourist Route de la dentelle, which includes other sites relating to lace and textile history. If you are interested in the craft, these themes connect local tradition with a broader perspective on textile history. Tour arrangements may change; check the current options in advance.
Saint-Pierre Church offers a different historical focus. It was built in the 12th century over an older structure that is thought to date from the late 10th century. The side chapels in the nave were added in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Its architectural history therefore encompasses both an early, conjectural predecessor and several centuries of later additions. Château de Mons showcases building phases from the 11th, 17th and 19th centuries. The owner gives tours of the château and discusses not only its architectural history but also its gardens, prints and collections. Visits are subject to reservation and the schedule.
Gardens and the Base de loisirs
The Jardin pour la Terre covers 6.5 hectares and includes more than 700 plant species and 2,000 plant varieties. Its planted areas are laid out in the shapes of continents, while the lawns represent seas and oceans. The garden is thus defined by two distinct features: its plant diversity and its arrangement as a planisphere. The grounds and their world-map layout give a visit a different focus from the historic buildings or the lace museum.
The Base de loisirs d’Arlanc has a body of water, two tennis courts, a multisport court, a volleyball court, children’s play equipment and shaded picnic areas. If swimming is part of your plans, check local conditions in advance. The Base is a specific starting and finishing point for the La Dore et la Dolore circular route, which begins and ends there. There is also a car park at the Base; check the parking situation before your outing.
Two circular routes, different levels of difficulty
La Dore et la Dolore is a difficult circular route covering 15.1 kilometres. The stated duration is 4 hours and 15 minutes; the route is marked in green and signposted PR. Its length and estimated time help with planning your day, while its difficult rating remains an important point of comparison in its own right. Check the latest route information before setting out.
The Circuit n°36 Le Tour d’Arlanc is a very easy, 17.1-kilometre mountain biking loop, marked for VTT, with a duration of 3 hours. By comparison, this loop is 2 kilometres longer than La Dore et la Dolore but has a shorter stated duration. The different activities and difficulty ratings therefore matter just as much as the distance: first decide whether you want to go hiking or mountain biking, then compare the relevant route details.
Weekly market and railway
The weekly market takes place on Monday mornings in the town centre and offers a chance to discover local producers. If the market is a fixed part of your trip, plan to visit on a Monday morning and check the date again before you set off.
AGRIVAP’s tourist railway line between Ambert and La Chaise-Dieu has a station in Arlanc, at Avenue de la Gare, 63220 Arlanc. Train services are subject to the timetable; check with the operator before travelling. This lets you consider the market, railway and other activities as separate planning options without assuming a fixed itinerary.
