Pontgibaud brings together layers of architectural history and two different kinds of hiking route: the La cheire loop trail, with a stated duration of two hours, and the 47-kilometre GR 89 through the southern part of the Combrailles. Château Dauphin, Église Saint-Benoît and the Musée des Mines d’Argent offer additional perspectives on the town through its fortress architecture, church history and mining heritage.

Château Dauphin: fortified castle and garden

Château Dauphin is a fortified castle listed as a Historic Monument. Construction began in the late 12th century and was completed in the 15th century. The specifically named features include a keep and six towers. The site can therefore be described through its defensive architecture and a building history spanning several centuries.

The Château also has a sunken kitchen garden. It is protected as a historic monument and has been awarded the Jardin Remarquable designation. Alongside the fortified complex, the landscaped garden and the special recognition it has received also stand out. Visitors interested in historic sites will therefore find different aspects of Château Dauphin in Pontgibaud: its architectural development, its towers and its award-winning garden.

Church history and silver mining

Église Saint-Benoît also has several historical layers. Pontgibaud’s first church dates from the 12th century and was badly damaged by an earthquake in the 15th century. It was later rebuilt and retains its Gothic appearance from that period. The church was restored and extended in the 19th century. Some of its interior furnishings come from the former Chartreuse du Port-Sainte-Marie. The rebuilding, later work and origins of individual furnishings thus belong to different chapters of its history.

The Musée des Mines d’Argent is located in outbuildings of Château Dauphin. Its exhibition covers the extraction and processing of silver-bearing lead ore and includes a reconstruction of a mine gallery. The museum focuses on something different from the castle and church: here, the emphasis is on ore extraction and processing, while the other sites mentioned are shaped by architectural and church history.

La cheire and the GR 89: two types of route

La cheire de Pontgibaud is a 7.5-kilometre circular hiking trail with a stated duration of two hours. It crosses a volcanic lava flow from Puy de Côme, dotted with unusual rock formations. The trail can be walked every day throughout the year, provided weather conditions are favourable. Check conditions before setting out; route distances and details may change. The length and stated duration offer a concrete guide for planning your time, while the weather determines whether the trail is accessible.

At 47 kilometres, the GR 89, known as the Chemin de Montaigne, is considerably longer than the La cheire loop. It crosses the southern part of the Combrailles between Pontgibaud and La Celle and follows part of the 1581 journey made by the humanist Michel Eyquem de Montaigne from Rome to Bordeaux. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in their focus: La cheire passes through a volcanic landscape, while the GR 89 also has a historical connection to Montaigne’s journey.

Fishing on the Sioule

Fishing is another activity described here. On the Sélectif « sans tuer » – Sioule – Pontgibaud fishing stretch, salmonids must be returned to the water immediately. The requirement to release fish immediately applies only to salmonids there. As fishing regulations may change, check the current local rules before your visit.

Pontgibaud therefore offers a concrete range of themes to consider when planning your trip: fortress architecture and a garden, church history, a mining museum, a loop through a volcanic rocky landscape, a longer historical route and a fishing stretch with its own regulations. The stated route distances and the loop’s duration help distinguish between the two hiking options; for the fishing stretch, be sure to check the applicable rules in advance.
