Mirefleurs was built on the western slopes of the Puys Saint-André and Saint-Romain. The former fortified village, with its typical winegrowers’ architecture, offers a cultural focus; for a trip that includes some exercise, there is also the Busséol Loop. Maison Domat apparently dates from the 15th century; Puy Saint-Romain adds another specific point of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Mirefleurs, you can choose between local history, a loop hike with a defined duration, and a Puy accessible on foot from Mirefleurs as the focus of your visit.
Townscape and history
As a former fortified village, Mirefleurs has a strong historical character; its typical winegrowers’ architecture also reflects a distinctive local building style. Both are part of the destination’s cultural identity and complement the appeal of its individual sights. Maison Domat is a specific example of a townhouse, while the Busséol Loop also takes in smaller heritage features. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider local history and hiking as separate interests, without one replacing the other.
Maison Domat and its graffiti
Maison Domat is a townhouse that apparently dates from the 15th century. It has been listed as a historic monument by decree since 7 November 2000. A precisely located feature can be found in the round room on the top floor of the stair tower: it contains 225 graffiti, including drawings of heads. These details combine the house’s tentative dating with a distinctive feature of its architecture. For culture enthusiasts, Maison Domat offers a specific way to explore Mirefleurs’ architectural history—from the townhouse itself to a single room with its drawings.
Busséol Loop: distance, views and heritage
The Busséol Loop is 10.5 kilometres long, rated easy, and takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Its distance, difficulty and approximate duration give you clear reference points for planning this part of your trip. Along the way, the route offers panoramic views of Busséol Castle, Lignat, Billom and Cournon, as well as the castles of Mauzun and Montmorin, the Chaîne des Puys and the Allier River. Smaller heritage features are also part of the route: a washhouse, a fountain and a Volvic stone cross. The trail therefore combines landscape views with architectural and historical details, rather than focusing solely on a viewpoint.
Puy Saint-Romain and how to get there
Puy Saint-Romain is accessible on foot from Mirefleurs and is used by paragliders. This adds another point of interest to the Busséol Loop: a Puy that can be reached on foot from Mirefleurs and also plays a role for paragliders. To reach the Busséol Loop, travel from Clermont-Ferrand via the A75, exit 5 at Orcet, then continue towards Les Martres-de-Veyre and on to Mirefleurs. Parking is available on Rue du Guichet by the cemetery. The loop goes through Mirefleurs and returns to the car park via the town hall, Place Jean-Domat, Rue de la Grande-Charreyre, the church, the steps and Rue du Guichet. Check current road and parking conditions before setting out.
