In Solignac-sur-Loire, landscapes, hiking and heritage come together: the Cascade de la Beaume, the PR067 route and the ensemble of Saint-Vincent Church and castle ruins each offer something different. When planning your day, the key distinction is between the 20-minute walk to the waterfall viewpoint and the longer hiking route, which is rated difficult. Another option for pedestrians and cyclists is the Via Velay, which follows a former railway line.
Waterfall and different walking times
The Cascade de la Beaume is 27 metres high. It was formed as the Ourzie River eroded the basalt plateau. At an altitude of 900 metres, the waterfall lies between Solignac-sur-Loire and Le Brignon. Its height, the river and the basalt plateau are among the defining features of this natural attraction.
From the car park, a 20-minute walk alongside the river leads to the panoramic viewpoint at the Cascade de la Beaume. PR067 is the longer hiking option: the route is rated difficult, covers 10.6 kilometres and takes about three hours. It returns to Solignac-sur-Loire via the greenway and also includes a section alongside the river. This gives you two clearly different time estimates to consider when planning.
Via Velay and viaduct
The Via Velay is a greenway adapted for pedestrians and cyclists along the former railway line between Le Puy-en-Velay and Langogne. It offers a way to experience the former rail route on foot or by bicycle. The Viaduc de la Gagne in Solignac-sur-Loire is 184 metres long.
Church and castle remains
Saint-Vincent Church and the adjacent ruins of the former castle form a heritage ensemble worth seeing. The cemetery is located within the castle ruins. Today, only a few remnants of the fortifications and part of the square tower wall remain.
The Romanesque Saint-Vincent Church is partially protected. Its nave has a pointed barrel vault; the south wall contains burial niches and bas-reliefs. The apse was renovated at the end of the 15th century. The church also houses the sculptural group Black Madonna and Child known as Notre-Dame de Solignac.
Another archaeological site is Abri Laborde, also known as Abri de Baume Vallée. The site includes a rock shelter dating from the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic. These two named periods provide a specific timeframe for this part of the local heritage.
Autumn fair and when to visit
The Foire à la patate is an annual event held in autumn. The programme includes a market featuring local producers, potato sales and family activities. If you want the festival to determine when you travel, check the date of that year’s edition. When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: hiking, scenery, heritage or the seasonal market will each lead to a different daily itinerary.
