In Tence, protected historic buildings meet trails through the town and surrounding countryside. When planning your visit, you can choose between a walk through the lanes, visits with specific guided-tour requirements, and hikes of varying lengths. This lets you focus your stay on local history, pharmacy culture or outdoor activities.

Historic Buildings and Pharmacy History

The Croix-menhir de Mendigoules is a menhir and archaeological site. It has been protected as a historic monument since January 5, 1989. The Chapelle des Pénitents is also a listed monument, including its interior furnishings; it was built in 1813. Guided tours are offered there weekly in July and August by reservation. Outside the peak season, tours are available for groups. Check the seasonal schedule before your trip.

The façades and roofs of Château du Besset have been protected as a historic monument since September 30, 1991. The lordship of Besset is already mentioned in texts from the mid-13th century. This early written mention of the lordship should be distinguished from the later date on which the castle’s structural features were granted protection.

Tence’s former hospice pharmacy is now the Musée de la Pharmacie. During a visit, you can learn about the site’s history and how various pharmacy instruments work. The exhibits include two historical models: one based on writings from 1521 and another based on digitized Napoleonic cadastral documents from 1830. Visiting arrangements vary by season; outside the designated period, visits are by appointment.

The pharmacy at HĂ´pital Saint-Joseph, including its wooden interior furnishings, is protected as a historic monument. The furnishings appear to date from the first half of the 19th century. Tence therefore offers several specific points of interest for anyone interested in architectural history and the development of pharmacy.

Lanes, Walks and Hikes

The Charreyrons, Tence’s narrow lanes, are associated with the town’s fortifications. The “A la découverte de Tence” walk passes through these lanes and by the main historic buildings. Exploring the town is therefore about more than a single building: it also takes in the sequence of lanes and structures throughout the town. Occitan, which is still spoken in Tence, is also part of its living cultural heritage.

For a longer circular hike, PR040 La Roche druidique de Crouzilhac covers 12.8 kilometres; this difficult route starts and ends in Tence. The “Le Château du Besset et le Lignon” circular route is listed as 7.47 kilometres and takes approximately two hours. It starts at Place de la Mairie, goes to Château du Besset and continues to the Lignon, before returning to Tence via Chemin de la Meyre. The distance and duration help you compare the routes; the shorter route is not automatically classified as easy. Check the route’s marking conditions before setting out.

The marked Circuit du Druide also leads to the Roche Druidique. An explanatory booklet is available from the tourist office. For a shorter outing, the natural area at Plan d’eau de Bathelane is about a 15-minute walk from Tence. The “Balade le long du Lignon” leads from the village to this lake. There is also an accessible fishing spot at Tence’s fishing pond.

Plan Your Stay

The activities require different amounts of time: a walk takes in the lanes and historic buildings, guided tours at the Chapelle des Pénitents are subject to reservation and seasonal requirements, and the hikes vary in length and stated duration. If you are looking for a hotel in Tence, you can start by deciding whether to focus your stay on local history, a guided tour or longer walks. Plan your days around the relevant schedules and routes.
