A stay in Salettes can be shaped around specific themes: the Église Saint-Pierre and its different building phases, Camp d'Antoune and its explanation of the volcanic landscape, and the PR584 and GR3 hiking trails. There is also the Château de Soubreys, with its clearly described architectural layout. Cultural, archaeological and landscape-related aspects come together here.

Église Saint-Pierre: Building Phases and Transept

The Église Saint-Pierre de Salettes is a Romanesque building later expanded with Gothic elements. Side chapels form a transept, extending the church space across its longitudinal axis. The façade dates from the 16th century and is crowned by a distinctive bell gable. The Romanesque structure, later Gothic additions and dated façade are distinct features of the church.

Heritage protection is also part of the church’s history: a decree dated January 31, 1964, placed it under protection. Visitors interested in architecture will find several aspects to explore, from the basic layout with its transept and later additions to the 16th-century façade.

Camp d'Antoune: Volcanic Landscape and the Iron Age

At Camp d'Antoune, information panels explain the volcanic surroundings and the formation of the Devès volcanoes. The discovery trail offers a way to explore these topics on site. This makes the location interesting for travelers who want to understand not only the landscape itself, but also how it formed.

The historical picture at the camp includes the presence of people from the Second Iron Age; farther south, the Roman world was firmly established. Thus, an explanation of the volcanic surroundings and a historical perspective come together at the same site. These two topics offer different ways to explore the area: one focuses on how the landscape formed, the other on the people who lived there and the contrast with the Roman world at the time.

PR584 and GR3: Different Trail Profiles

The PR584 Le camp d'Antoune is a circular hike starting in Salettes. Check route conditions and signage before setting out. The GR3 Salette–Chadron stage follows a different route: it starts at the square, heads right in a northerly direction, follows the road on the left, crosses the D 37 and then continues for 200 m toward Bordeyrac.

Some sections of the GR3 stage run along the edge of an ancient oppidum and offer views of the Loire gorges. The PR584 starts in Salettes and follows a circular route; the GR3 is a Salette–Chadron stage.

Château de Soubreys: Towers, Wall and Chapel

The Château de Soubreys preserves feudal remains from the 14th and 15th centuries. It consists of two parallel residential wings linked by a curtain wall, with each of their eastern corners flanked by a large tower. The ground floor of the northeastern tower houses a chapel with a ribbed vault and a keystone.

A ribbed vault is structured by intersecting ribs; the keystone marks where they meet. The architectural description thus moves from the overall layout of the residential wings and connecting wall to a specific room in the northeastern tower. The château complements Salettes’ other themes with its distinctive combination of feudal remains, a clearly laid-out complex and chapel architecture.
