Villeneuve-D'allier can be discovered from three distinct perspectives: the history of the Pont suspendu de Saint-Ilpize, a waymarked circular hike through a landscape of terraces, and a cycling stage with views of the Allier. When planning your stay, the main thing is to decide which of these you want to focus on. The cultural sites tell stories of construction and local tradition; PR341 runs along the edge of the gorge and through areas with stone terrace walls, while the Via Allier stage places Villeneuve-D'allier on a route between Brioude and Lavoûte-Chilhac.
Bridge and Church: History on the Allier
The Pont suspendu de Saint-Ilpize was built in 1879 and lies partly within Villeneuve-D'allier. It has been listed as a historic monument since 2 October 2015. These dates mark different milestones: construction in 1879 and its subsequent listing in 2015.
The Église de la Nativité de la Sainte-Vierge was built between 1825 and 1827. It stands at the end of a narrow lane on the left bank of the Allier, opposite Saint-Ilpize. Local tradition links its construction to a memorable flood: women from Villeneuve drowned while having to cross the Allier by ferry to reach Saint-Ilpize; the church was built after the event. The dates thus form a sequence: the church was built first, followed by the bridge and, later, the historic monument listing.
On Foot Through the Terraced Landscape
PR341 Les Terrasses de la Ribeyre is a waymarked circular hiking trail starting in Villeneuve-D'allier. Its Petite Randonnée waymarks and circular layout indicate the type of route; in terms of scenery, it runs along the edge of the Allier gorges and through areas with stone terrace walls. The gorge edge and the terraced areas are part of the same trail, bringing two distinct landscape features together in one circuit. If you want to explore the area on foot, this route offers a specific way to experience both the circular trail and the terraced landscape.
Cycling the Via Allier
Stage 12 of the Via Allier cycling route, from Brioude to Lavoûte-Chilhac, reaches Villeneuve-D'allier and then continues along the D585. The route offers numerous views of the Allier. Unlike PR341, it connects named places: Villeneuve-D'allier lies on the way from Brioude to Lavoûte-Chilhac. If you plan to ride this stage, check the road conditions on the D585 before setting off; they may change. The Allier plays different roles here: local tradition tells of a ferry crossing to Saint-Ilpize, while the cycling stage offers views of the river.
Which Focus Suits Your Stay?
If you are more interested in cultural history, the bridge and church offer distinct historical points of reference: the construction history and subsequent listing of the bridge, and a local tradition about crossing the river.
