In Vielprat, local walking trails meet the GR3 long-distance trail, which passes through the commune. Choosing the right scale is useful for planning: the local trails are signposted for hiking, mountain biking and trail running, while the GR3 covers a ten-day, 169.4-kilometre crossing. Other highlights include the Église Saint-Martin, the old cemetery and additional historic sites.

Walking trails and the GR3: two different scales

The hiking, mountain biking and trail-running routes in Vielprat are Respirando-certified, maintained and signposted. This gives you a choice of ways to explore. The GR3 Sources et Gorges de la Loire is a different kind of route: it passes through Vielprat and forms part of a ten-day, 169.4-kilometre crossing between Aurec-sur-Loire and Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc. The distance and duration refer to the crossing as a whole. When planning, it is therefore worth distinguishing between local circular routes and the scale of this long-distance hike.

Église Saint-Martin: architecture and features

The Église Saint-Martin de Vielprat was built in 1870. It is a Romanesque church with a comb-style bell tower housing three bells. Its features include two white-marble altars, a historic confessional and a painting signed by Amanda Fougère. Four figurative stained-glass windows depict, among others, Saint Martin, Saint Joseph, the Virgin and Child, and Saint François-Régis. The building, its features and the images offer different ways to appreciate this cultural heritage site, from its architecture and individual furnishings to the figures in the windows.

The old cemetery and historic sites

The old cemetery adjoins the church. A local account from 2020 describes moss-covered stone walls, leaning old headstones, and rusty crosses and crucifixes partly concealed by vegetation. It mentions around fifty graves and an unobstructed view of Salettes. The iron cross in the church square has also been restored and returned to its stone base.

The heritage sites also include two private properties dating from different centuries. Mas de Testud is a private heritage property from the 14th century. The Maison forte de la Bastide is a private fortified property dating from the 16th century. Together with the church, cemetery and cross, these sites showcase different facets of local heritage; the private status of the two properties is part of how they are classified.

Vielprat in the landscape of the Loire Gorges

Vielprat is one of eleven communes included in the Natura 2000 site “Gorges de la Loire et affluents partie sud.” This places the commune within a clearly defined landscape area. This regional context complements the local walking trails and heritage sites without equating the commune with the entire area.

When planning your trip, you can start by choosing your focus: walking trails in Vielprat, the history and culture around Saint Martin, or the full ten-day GR3 crossing. These options differ mainly in scale and can help you define the kind of stay you are looking for.
