Two bridges offer different ways into Brives-Charensac’s history: the Vieux pont de Brives is notable for its surviving structural elements, while the Pont de la Chartreuse spans the Loire at a point where sections of the Roman Voie Bolène ended. There is also art at Place de l’Église, changing exhibitions and seasonal activities. You can therefore plan your stay around architectural history, a specific event or time outdoors.
Bridges and architectural history
Two piers and two toll houses have survived at the Vieux pont de Brives. They mark the entrance to the structure on the right bank. Based on its carefully executed masonry and surviving cutwaters, the bridge is attributed to the 14th century. It has been partly in ruins since the 18th century. The dating is therefore a historical attribution, while the surviving elements and the described state of preservation offer concrete points of reference for its architectural history.
The Pont de la Chartreuse offers a different historical connection: it spans the Loire where two sections of the Roman Voie Bolène, which crossed the Velay, ended. The bridge has been classified as a historic monument since 21 February 1914. The comparison thus highlights the surviving elements and attributed construction period at the Vieux pont, and the river crossing and connection to the Roman route at the Pont de la Chartreuse. The two bridges reveal different aspects of the town’s history.
Art, exhibitions and market
The fresco “Au fil de Loire,” which received the “Pinceau d’Or” award in 2009, is located at Place de l’Église. You can find changing exhibitions at the Médiathèque Le Moulin aux livres, where free exhibitions are regularly displayed along the staircase. The themes and dates vary. If you want to plan your visit around a particular exhibition, check the current programme.
Place de l’Église is also the location of the Marché de Brives-Charensac. In 2026, the market is scheduled for Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. You can therefore factor in a Friday morning when planning; check the times again before travelling. The market and the fresco share a location, but offer different reasons to visit: the weekly market date in the 2026 calendar, and a permanent work of art.
Events and outdoor activities
The FĂŞte votive takes place every year on the first weekend in July. Its three-day programme includes a flea market, a running race, a concert, a funfair, fireworks and other activities. Individual events may vary. If you plan to travel for the festival, check the dates and programme for the relevant year in advance.
For route planning, the Via Velay is another option: this greenway climbs steadily from Brives-Charensac, with an average gradient of 2%. It is described as regular, easy and suitable for all audiences. The gradient provides a specific indication of the route profile, without specifying a walking time.
The outdoor swimming pool at Camping municipal d’Audinet is heated and covers 200 m²; the paddling pool for younger children measures 50 m². The outdoor pool is open to the public in July and August. If this is relevant to your travel plans, check the facilities and seasonal opening arrangements before you travel.
Travel dates and hotel search
For the Fête votive, plan around the first weekend in July; in 2026, the Marché de Brives-Charensac takes place on Friday mornings. The outdoor pool is open to the public in July and August. If you are mainly interested in the bridges, the fresco or exhibitions, you can choose your travel dates to suit your priorities. Then tailor your search to your preferred dates and check any event dates or seasonal details that matter for your stay.
