The Basilique Saint-Julien is visible from afar, even before you arrive. In Brioude, its long construction history is intertwined with a pilgrimage tradition that can be experienced at several places in the town. There are also galleries, crafts and the landscape along the Allier. You can shape your stay around a particular interest: sacred architecture and pilgrimage sites, art and creative work, or outdoor activities.
Basilica, pilgrimage sites and historic architecture
The Basilique Saint-Julien was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its contemporary stained-glass windows are spread across 37 window openings; at the same time, the basilica was a stop on the Way of St James for many pilgrims. A visit therefore brings together a specific architectural feature and the site’s historical role. For safety reasons, the Chapelle Saint Michel inside the basilica can only be accessed as part of a guided tour. Check this access requirement before your trip.
Another site associated with the pilgrimage tradition is the Fontaine Saint Julien. It is surmounted by a vaulted Romanesque structure dating from the 12th century, with two remarkable capitals, and remains a place of pilgrimage, particularly during the novena to Saint Julien. A Mass is celebrated there on 28 August, the patronal feast day of the town of Brioude. If you would like to plan your stay around this date, check that year’s programme. The basilica and the Fontaine reflect two different aspects of the past: a historic pilgrimage stop and a pilgrimage site that remains active today.
Le Doyenné also brings together architectural history and culture. The building has a heraldic-decorated ceiling classified as a Historic Monument and has been restored as a venue for major exhibitions. A protected historic feature and use as an exhibition venue thus sit side by side.
Art, exhibitions and crafts
For visual art, La Maison de Mandrin is a municipal gallery featuring carefully curated exhibitions. Its opening hours may vary by season. Micro-Folie Brioude offers another way to experience art: the digital museum projects more than 5,000 high-resolution works from 11 themed collections. At the Aquarium La Maison du Saumon et de la Rivière, you can see more than 800 fish from nearly 40 species. The cultural offerings therefore range from digitally presented collections to an aquarium with a diverse range of fish.
Visitors interested in reading and writing will find exhibitions and events on these subjects at the Médiathèque Jacques Cabotte. It is open to everyone and admission is free; check the current opening hours in advance. Hôtel de la Dentelle has a focus on crafts: during a visit, you can see the workshop, and made-to-measure lace-making courses are also offered. Confirm course availability before booking.
The Mosaïque Atelier Céline Cadenel focuses on making glass mosaics. Introductory courses are offered there for adults and children. Visits are by appointment only; during a visit, the artist explains the craft and presents her work. The different offerings thus have distinct focuses: exhibitions, digital art, lace-making or hands-on mosaic work.
Along the Allier and on the hiking trails
Brioude lies on the Allier, is surrounded by mid-altitude mountains and sits in a protected, varied natural landscape suited to outdoor activities. The river is also used for fishing in Brioude. The landscape and culture can therefore be treated as separate interests for your stay, without assuming that you need to combine them in one programme.
Two hiking routes have specified lengths. The GR470 stage from Brioude to Villeneuve d’Allier is 20.74 kilometres long. The PR026 La Roche Dragon hiking route in Brioude measures 8.85 kilometres. Comparing their lengths can help you assess the two options; check the current trail status before setting out, as route listings may change.
Practical information for your stay
The Brioude Tourist Office is located in a spot with impressive views of the Basilique Saint-Julien. For a culture-focused stay, the basilica, the Fontaine, Le Doyenné and the municipal gallery offer different points of interest; if you would rather try your hand at making something, you can ask about the courses and visiting options at the workshops. Seasonal opening hours, access to the Chapelle Saint Michel, lace-course availability and the current condition of the hiking trails are all specific details you should check before your visit or booking.
