A long-distance hiking trail through Cassaniouze, Gothic architecture and an annual spring sale of fouaces offer different highlights. There are also hiking trails and a road that runs through a centuries-old chestnut grove. You can tailor your visit to your interests: hiking, scenery and cycling, architecture or a seasonal tradition.
Hiking around Cassaniouze
The GR465 passes through Cassaniouze and is 129 kilometres long in total. It begins in the Monts du Cantal, passes through Carladès and the Goul and Lot valleys, and ends in Conques via one of two possible routes. The entire long-distance trail is marked with waymarkers officially approved by the French hiking federation. The 129 kilometres describe the entire route; when planning your hike, it is worth considering the section through Cassaniouze separately.
The Bécarie-Vinzelle hiking route connects the hamlet of La Bécarie in Cassaniouze with La Vinzelle in Grand-Vabre, in Aveyron. The village of La Vinzelle sits on a rocky outcrop. Another hiking route, La Dame du Castel d’Auze, runs through the territory of Cassaniouze. From the Rochers de Servant, it offers views of the green gorges of the Don. These routes have different focal points: the connection between La Bécarie and La Vinzelle on the one hand, and views of the Don gorges on the other. La Bécarie also preserves the memory of the Enfarinés.
Chestnut landscapes and cycling route
The D601 climbs steeply for ten kilometres from the banks of the Lot through a centuries-old chestnut grove. The D601 offers spectacular views of the Lot. Another option for planning your route is the 35-kilometre cycling route “Au cœur des châtaigniers,” for which Cassaniouze is a possible starting point. The figures refer to different planning distances: ten kilometres for the steep climb on the D601, and 35 kilometres for the cycling route. The road’s scenery is defined by the chestnut grove and views of the Lot; the cycling route has its own name and a possible starting point in Cassaniouze.
Church, cross and local history
The Church of Notre-Dame de la Purification retains the choir, one bay and the bell tower of a Gothic church built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The bell tower has been partially protected as a Monument historique since 2002. The town’s architectural history is therefore linked to a specific heritage designation.
A cross is displayed in the Sainte-Croix chapel, where its goldsmith’s work can be viewed in a special presentation: at the press of a button, the cross is illuminated and slowly rotated. It has been classified as an object of cultural heritage since 30 June 1908. A visiting time window of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. is provided for the twin church of Cassaniouze. Check before your visit whether this time window applies on your date.
Seasonal events
The Ultra Rando takes place every year and offers several hiking routes for different fitness levels. Every spring, Cassaniouze also holds a sale of fouaces in connection with the commune’s communal bread ovens. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the dates for the relevant edition.
