On Besse’s village square, opposite the church, stands the lime tree known as the Tilleul de Sully. Together with the small Romanesque church, it creates a striking focal point in the centre; different views of the landscape open up in the upper part of the village. When planning your visit, you can choose to focus on a walking loop, architectural details or scenic views.
On foot: the PR-Besse trail loop
The PR-Besse hiking loop is 7 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. It starts in the square by the church and then returns to Besse. The loop is described as easy, but also includes several stony sections. Both details matter when assessing the route: the difficulty rating does not mean you can overlook the stony stretches. The approximate time gives you an idea of how long the walk takes; you can also factor in breaks and other stops when planning your day.
Church and townhouses
The Church of Notre-Dame de la Visitation is a small Romanesque church. Its masonry bell gable has two bell openings. This bell structure is one specific detail to look out for when viewing the church, alongside its Romanesque style.
The centre is also home to townhouses dating from the 19th century. Together with the Romanesque church, they offer different architectural points of interest in Besse. The municipality consists of two distinct parts, offering another point of reference for exploring the layout of the village.
Views from the upper part of the village
The upper part of Besse offers views of the Monts du Cantal and across the Bertrande Valley. These are two distinct landscapes: the Monts du Cantal on the one hand, and the Bertrande Valley on the other. Walkers can also see the Croix du Ciel there. Viewpoints and a named monument thus offer separate points of interest in the same part of the village.
Guided tour or motorised circuit
A tourism listing, updated on 22 January 2026, names Besse as a destination for guided tours by RM Tourisme. If a guided tour fits your stay, check the dates in advance.
For a motorised outing, the 90-kilometre «Entre Doire et Bertrande» car and motorcycle circuit follows the D342 towards Besse. From the plateau, there is a viewpoint overlooking the Monts du Cantal. The two routes differ considerably in scale: the PR-Besse loop is 7 kilometres long, while the car and motorcycle circuit is 90 kilometres.
Plan your accommodation search around your itinerary
If you are looking for a holiday rental, consider what matters most for your stay: the PR loop starts in the square by the church, while the viewpoints and the Croix du Ciel are in the upper part of the village. This information may help you check the location of a particular property and choose your preferred starting point.
