Calvinet offers two marked routes with different levels of difficulty: a challenging mountain biking loop and a moderately difficult hiking trail. There is also the Puy Capel viewpoint, nature-based activities at Étang d’Estanquiol and notable reminders of the area’s history. The specific route details make it easy to see which of these highlights interests you most.

Hiking, Mountain Biking and Views

The Circuit VTT – Au cœur des châtaigniers starts in Calvinet, at the village square by the church. The marked circular route is 35 kilometres long, involves 690 metres of ascent and is rated difficult. Measurements and ratings may be revised, so check the latest information before setting out.

The Sentier des Puys also starts in Calvinet, but it is a hiking trail: it covers 12.1 kilometres, is marked in yellow and is rated moderately difficult. Its stated duration is 3 hours and 15 minutes, with 280 metres of ascent. Local trail conditions can change, so it is advisable to check them before your hike.

The two routes differ not only in length and elevation gain, but also in activity and difficulty rating: a difficult mountain biking loop contrasts with a moderately difficult hike. Puy Capel adds a viewpoint to the options. From Calvinet, it offers views of the Aubrac and Aveyron plateaus; there is an orientation table and a chapel on site. The Chemin du Carladès crosses Puy Capel. From Étang d’Estanquiol, you can reach it on foot via the trail.

Étang d’Estanquiol and Waterside Activities

You can enjoy a swim in natural surroundings at Étang d’Estanquiol when conditions are favourable. In summer, first-category fishing for whitefish may also be possible there, subject to favourable conditions. Check swimming access and conditions before your trip.

Churches, Chapels and Fountains

The Saint-Barthélemy Church was built in the 14th century. Its appearance is simple, and its bell tower is covered with slate tiles. The republican fountain in Place Jean de Bonnefon is topped by a statue of Liberty. The statue was inaugurated in 1908.

The Chapelle de Rampon also has a distinctive local history: it was built in 1881 by a mason from Calvinet on a plot owned by the municipality, in the form of a sécadou, a chestnut-drying shed. Locally, it is also known as the “chapelle des amoureux” (Chapel of Lovers). This name adds a traditional local designation to its architectural history.

Two other sites are the focus of work on their built heritage. The old fountain on Rue du Pavé is being restored, while the washhouse at l’Estanquiol is being enhanced.
