Romanesque architecture and tangible links to pilgrimage shape Morlaàs. The Église Sainte-Foy is listed as a historic monument and is one of the gems of Romanesque architecture in Béarn. A walk, historic buildings, markets and the Forêt de Lahitau offer further ideas for planning your visit. First decide whether you want to focus on visiting the church, a specific market day or the walk: the church can be visited independently; guided tours must be arranged in advance.

Église Sainte-Foy and Pilgrimage History

The choir of the Église Sainte-Foy is particularly revealing. The sculpted capitals depict the beheading of Sainte-Foy and the famous « piton de Jaca », a motif emblematic of the pilgrimage routes. The church thus brings both Romanesque architecture and a distinctive visual world connected to the pilgrimage routes into focus. Anyone interested in medieval architecture or religious art will find a clear focus for their visit here.

The church can be visited independently. Guided tours are available only by prior appointment. If you prefer a guided tour, arrange it in advance and check the current conditions before your visit.

Walk and Historic Buildings

The « Balade patrimoine à Morlaàs » is a very easy 2 km walk that takes about two hours. The route is considered suitable for families and all audiences. Its approximate duration is a useful guide when planning your day. Signage and the route may be updated, so it is worth checking the information before setting out.

Other historical points of interest include the former washhouse on Rue de la Fontaine, the last remaining washhouse in Morlaàs, and the Maison de la Baque. It was once owned by the Vicomtes de Béarn and incorporated into the town’s former defensive system. These sites offer two different perspectives on the town’s history: the former use of a washhouse and the ownership and defensive history of the Maison de la Baque.

Market Days and Event

There are two market days at Place de la Hourquie, with different schedules. A market is held there every other Friday from 8 am to 12 pm. On Saturday mornings, also from 8 am to 12 pm, local producers offer regional products and farm produce. If visiting a market is an important part of your trip, check the current schedule in advance; times may change.

The « Journée de l’élevage » may also be worth considering when choosing when to travel. Morlaàs traditionally holds it every two years; the first edition took place on 29 September 1973. The event alternates with the Basque Country, although individual editions may vary. Plan around the specific event date rather than relying solely on the usual schedule.

Forêt de Lahitau

As a natural attraction, the municipal Forêt de Lahitau complements the cultural sights. It is located a few kilometres from the centre of Morlaàs, covers 32 hectares and is divided into 22 plots. The predominant tree species include pedunculate oak, beech, sweet chestnut, field maple and birch. Its size, layout and tree species give a concrete impression of the woodland without equating it with a single cultural monument.

For planning your trip, there are different time slots to consider: the walk takes about two hours, while both markets mentioned are held in the morning from 8 am to 12 pm. If regional produce is important to you, the Saturday market suits that interest; if you are mainly looking for Romanesque art and pilgrimage history, the Église Sainte-Foy is an obvious focus. If travelling for a particular event or guided tour, check the relevant dates in advance.
