In Itxassou, you can explore the village’s history and landscape in different ways: the Xapata Cherry Conservatory and the Ateka focus on cherry culture, while trails, a natural site and activities on the Nive offer other points of interest. There is also Basque pelota and a church with richly decorated interiors. This gives you a choice between culture, activity and nature when planning your trip, rather than a single prescribed itinerary.

Cherry culture and village history

The Xapata Cherry Conservatory was established in 2008 on municipal land near the church of Itxassou. Admission is free. Information panels trace the history of cherries in the village, making cherry culture a distinct way to explore the area’s history.

Ateka, an interpretation centre in the village centre near the village fronton, covers a broader range of topics: historical heritage, fauna and flora, gastronomy, cherry culture and natural sites in Itxassou. If you don’t want to focus on just one subject, you’ll find connections there between culture, nature and food.

Pelota and church art

The Masters d’Itxassou are annual summer matches of Basque hand pelota. The specific programme may vary from year to year; if you’re travelling specifically for the Masters, check the dates for the relevant event.

The Église Saint-Fructueux was built in the 17th century. It is an example of Labourdin architecture and features gilded wood carvings and three levels of galleries. In 2026, the church is open year-round and free to visit.

Trails and landscape

On the Atharri Route, the trail runs for about 1 km along the Nive and passes the Pas de Roland. The Pas de Roland natural site lies on the trail along the Nive towards Artzamendi. A local legend associated with the Pas de Roland says that in 778, Roland opened a passage through a rock with his horse.

The Atharri Route also has a viewpoint overlooking a vulture nest on the opposite side of the gorge. Vulture sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Another route leads to the Peñas d’Itsusi. It follows the GR10 to the Méhatché Pass and offers views over the Regata de Aritzacun valley. Mountain conditions can vary; take this into account when planning.

The landmarks point in different directions when choosing a hike: Atharri links the trail along the Nive with the Pas de Roland, while the Peñas d’Itsusi route centres on the GR10, the Méhatché Pass and valley views. You can choose based on whether you prefer a river walk or views from a pass and across a valley.

Water and air activities

Evasion 64 is an activity centre in Itxassou offering water sports. It runs guided rafting trips on the Nive; the meeting point is the Evasion base – Maison Errola in Itxassou.

The Centre de Vol à Voile Iribarne Itxassou is based at the Itxassou airfield. It offers introductory and discovery flights in a glider—an activity different from hiking or rafting.
