Mendionde brings together striking natural and cultural features: the ZNIEFF area around Mont Baigura and the Crête d’Haltzamendi includes the commune, while churches and Château de Garro offer insights into Basque heritage. This gives you different options when planning your visit, from hiking trails and outdoor activities to architecture and history.
Baigura: Hiking trails and outdoor activities
The Baigura leisure center is located at the foot of the Baigura Massif, a mountain in the Basque Country that rises to 897 meters. The center is the starting point for 45 kilometers of marked hiking trails. If you would rather plan a ride to the summit than a hike, you can take the Petit Train du Baigura, which reaches the 897-meter summit in half an hour. As schedules may change, it is advisable to check them before your trip.
Other outdoor activities are also offered from the Baigura leisure center: paragliding, rides on all-terrain scooters, mountain biking, climbing and canyoning. At Baigu’Raid, introductory rides on electric all-terrain scooters last one to two hours. Guided downhill rides on all-terrain scooters from the center are also available. The activities offer different options; when planning, consider whether hiking, a trip to the summit or a particular outdoor activity is your main priority.
You can plan a meal at the La Gaita bar-restaurant. Check the opening hours in advance, as opening periods may change. This lets you include activities and a meal break as separate parts of your day without committing to a particular order.
Nature and history along the Urtsua-Ursuia trail
The “Mont Baigura et Crête d’Haltzamendi” ZNIEFF area includes Mendionde. The Baigura Massif contains most of the area’s peatlands, as well as important rocky habitats for cliff-nesting birds. The area is also designated under the Habitats Directive. These features give the natural landscape its own ecological significance, distinct from the specific outdoor activities on offer.
The springs of Ursuia are a natural feature along the Urtsua-Ursuia trail; numerous springs enrich the peatland flora in the surrounding area. The route also has historical and archaeological connections: it includes a section of the historic Napoleon Road. The site of Mokorreta along the trail was once home to a protohistoric fortified settlement. Nature, the history of the route and a former settlement site coexist here, without needing to be grouped together as a single attraction.
Churches and Château de Garro
Château de Garro was founded by the Navarrese family d’Urtubie de Garro. A pointed arch over a doorway dates from 1300; after a fire, the château was rebuilt in 1700. The protected historic monument is not limited to the château: the protection also covers the farm, outbuildings, terraces, former moat and gardens. These different parts of the estate are therefore all included in its protected status.
The Church of Saint-Cyprien in Mendionde has been listed as a historic monument since 1925. Its architectural features include three tiers of galleries, characteristic of Basque architecture. Ceiling frescoes depict the four seasons. These details give the church a different character from Château de Garro: here, the galleries and decorative artwork complement the château’s long history.
Another part of the area’s religious heritage is the Church of Saint-Martin in Gréciette, which dates from the 15th century. Inside the church is a marble holy water font; disc-shaped crosses stand in the cemetery. Together with Saint-Cyprien, these sites showcase different architectural and artistic features. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you want to experience Mendionde mainly for Baigura and outdoor activities, or focus more on its churches, château and regional history.
