Louvie-Soubiron reveals itself through its traces in stone: the Church of Saint-Martin-de-Tours preserves evidence of different building phases, while two hiking trails explore the quarry and former iron mining. Its geographical location also helps with orientation: the area stretches from the Ossau Valley to the Ouzom Valley.

Village and Views

Built on a mountainside, the village offers more expansive views over the valley along the route to the hamlet of Listo to the east. Listo lies at an altitude of 882 m. This gives visitors both the span between two valleys and a specific landmark on the eastern side to help with orientation.

The Building History of Saint-Martin-de-Tours

Only the Romanesque apse remains of the Church of Saint-Martin-de-Tours, founded in the 12th century. Around 1880, the church gained its bell tower and its only south aisle; the plans were drawn up by the architect Sabatté from Laruns. Dressed stone from the demolished church in Eaux-Bonnes was reused in the entrance portal. The apse, the alterations and the reused stones thus point to different historical moments rather than a single building phase.

Marble in the Quarry and the Village

The Louvie-Soubiron quarry contains grey-veined marble with cores of pure white marble. Marble from Louvie-Soubiron can also be found on door lintels and keystones in the village. Door lintels form the upper part of door openings; keystones sit in arches or vaults. These details complement one another: the quarry highlights the characteristics of the stone, while the village shows how it was used in building features.

Hiking Between the Quarry and the Mines

Circuit des carrières

The Circuit des carrières is an easy hike covering 2.1 km with 220 m of elevation gain and a stated duration of 1 hour 30 minutes. As a cultural heritage interpretation trail, it is marked in yellow; several information panels cover the subject of quarries. The route leads to a white marble quarry with a picnic table. The route details, panels and destination provide different points of reference for planning the hike.

Heritage Trail to the Baburet Mines

The heritage trail to the Baburet Mines passes through the municipalities of Ferrières and Louvie-Soubiron and explores the history of the former iron mines. The mine galleries are closed to the public, but their entrances can be viewed from the trail. This access restriction is important for planning: the trail leads to the entrances, not inside the galleries.

The Former Forge de Louvie

Another trace of historic mining can be seen in the completely levelled wall remains and scattered slag heaps of the former Forge de Louvie.

Different interests may guide your choice between the two hikes: the Circuit des carrières combines stated route details with quarry information panels and a white marble quarry as its destination. The Baburet heritage trail focuses on the history of the former iron mines; the galleries remain closed.
