In Monein, Jurançon wine, village history and rural trails come together. The hillsides link vineyards, orchards and farmhouses in Béarnais architecture. When planning your trip, you can choose different themes: a walk through the village, trails through the countryside, markets and tastings, or other activities.

Church, History and Landscape

The Church of Saint Girons was built between 1464 and 1520 and classified as a historic monument in 1913. Its timber structure is remarkable and has been compared to a forest of around one thousand oak trees. A medieval motte stands at the Casterasses site; a feudal castle probably stood there. The panorama from this spot looks out over the Pyrenees.

The vineyards are also part of the landscape: from Monein, there are views of the Jurançon vineyards. The hillsides also reveal a rural mix of vines, orchards and farmhouses in Béarnais architecture. The historic church and the cultivated landscape thus represent different aspects of the village.

Walks and Trails

The walking route “Si Monein m’était conté!” leads through the village and showcases its historical and cultural heritage. Eight information panels line the streets. The route combines a walk through Monein with stops that draw attention to the village’s history.

Another option is the nearby Bois du Laring, where a 4.5-kilometre woodland trail has been designed as a fun experience. The forest is eight kilometres south of Monein town centre. Sixteen information panels introduce the forest’s biodiversity and various tree species. Those interested in nature and trees will find a different theme here than on the village walk.

The Terra Aventura route “Le Jurançon du succès” is 3.5 kilometres long and designed as a family treasure hunt, with puzzles and collectible virtual Poï’z. Along the way, there are views of the Jurançon vineyards and the Church of Saint Girons in Monein. The combination of puzzles and the two viewpoints sets this route apart from the woodland trail’s information panels. Check accessibility and current operating status before travelling.

Jurançon, Markets and Tastings

A traditional market is held in the white-stone market hall on Monday mornings. On Friday afternoons, it hosts a market for local producers and farmers. As market times may change, it is advisable to check the latest schedule before visiting.

Wine visits also offer different experiences. At Domaine Bayard, guided tours of the vineyards and wine cellar are offered, along with accompanied tastings. Domaine Montesquiou offers guided tours of its facilities, tastings and wine sales. In addition, Jurançon wineries in the rural districts of Monein offer estate tours and tastings; availability should be checked with each winery.

The annual patron saint festivities take place on the first weekend of August. A Jurançon wine tasting is part of the Sunday morning programme. If you would like to plan your visit around the event, check the exact dates and programme in advance.

Other Activities

Maison Butine is a 2,000-square-metre organic flower farm with an agroecological approach. Visits by appointment introduce visitors to responsible flower production; flower workshops and training sessions are also available. Check the booking requirements, programme and availability before travelling.

The “Les petits sabots” equestrian centre offers fun riding activities for children. These include handling and caring for ponies, rides, riding lessons, and courses for beginners and advanced riders. At “Tyroliennes au Domaine Capdevielle,” four zip lines run over the vineyards, one of them nearly 300 metres long. Another activity at Domaine Capdevielle includes a 60-minute game with a tablet and equipment, as well as a wine tasting. The Church of Saint Girons also offers a sound-and-light show; check the current visitor programme in advance.

This makes it possible to pair your choice of destination with suitable activity planning, without combining different offerings into a fixed itinerary.
