Maslacq can be explored through its pilgrimage history, buildings and hiking. Stage 4 of the GR® 65 from Maslacq to Navarrenx is a clear hiking highlight; the Sanctuaire de Muret offers a different perspective shaped by landscape and history. These distinct themes can help you plan your trip according to whether a longer walk or cultural heritage is your priority.

Sanctuaire de Muret: Panoramic Views and Pilgrimage History

The Sanctuaire de Muret is located within the boundaries of the commune of Lendresse and is part of the cultural heritage of the Société d'Education Populaire de Maslacq. Set on a hill, it offers sweeping views of Orthez, Maslacq, Arthez de Béarn, Caubin and Sauvelade. Its location in Lendresse and its heritage association with Maslacq are distinct but equally important points of reference.

For around 500 years, the Sanctuaire was a famous pilgrimage site, until it was devastated during the Reformation, from 1569 to 1599. This long pilgrimage tradition and the devastation mark different chapters in its history. Hikers and pilgrims to Compostela who take the GR® 65 regularly visit the Sanctuaire. Its historic role as a pilgrimage site and its present-day connection with hikers thus exist side by side.

Historic Buildings in Maslacq

Before the French Revolution, the Château de Maslacq was the residence of the lay abbots of this village settlement. It is privately owned and cannot be visited. This restriction is important for planning: the château is a historic landmark, but not a place to visit.

The Tour Maslacq is a medieval tower outside the village. The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Maslacq is a religious historic monument in the commune of Maslacq, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Together with the château, these offer different points of connection to the area’s heritage: the château’s former role as a residence, the tower’s medieval origins and the church’s status as a religious monument.

Hiking: A Stage and an Interpretive Trail

Stage 4 of the GR® 65 from Maslacq to Navarrenx is 22.7 kilometres long. It takes about five hours and ten minutes on foot and is rated moderate. The route passes through a mix of woodland and farmland. This makes it possible to assess the hiking day not only by its destination and walking time, but also by its varied landscape. If you are considering the stage, you can take both the approximate duration and the stated difficulty level into account when planning.

The Sentier d'interprétation de Maslacq has been available since 11 April 2022; all the information panels have been installed. It has a different focus from the GR® 65 stage: here, the panels are part of the interpretive trail, while the long distance and destination of Navarrenx shape the planning there. If the signage is important for your visit, check its condition on site.
